OB Fly Fishing Thread


Could you name the rods and reels you believe are ready for speck fishing.

Also, what area are you fishing in? Louisiana, Florida, Northeast/west coast?

You can specks fish on the fly with topwater. I haven't had a ton of success with specks on fly except the handful of times I've run across school specs.

Redfish on the other hand is a different story and you can go after smaller reds with a 6wt with no problem.
Redfish on the fly will completely change how you view fishing for reds.

It will catch anything you can throw at around here. Reds, trout, jacks, ladyfish, etc...

Its the jack of all trades work horse. If you get big into it you'll find that you will want to add a variety of patterns, or start tying your own, but for a start this is essentially the chartreuse cocahoe plastic of the fly world.

9 wt is overkill for specs. It will wear your arm and shoulder out. Go with 6-7 weight rod with line over weighted one weight above recommended rod weight to make for better casting in windy conditions. Go with a WFF line at first (Weight Forward, Floating line). Throw pink charlies and clousers. Leader length is not important because you will be trimming it as you are changing flies. Start with 10 ft leader and change it as you shorten it when changing flies and cutting out wind knots. Fly reels aren't an issue unless you are going for big game.

Learn the "double-haul" technique online to get some extra casting distance.

That's actually a 9 ft. (length) and 5-weight fly rod. You want to match the rod with the correct size reel as a 4/5/6 reel will be best suited for that rod. The rod pictured is perfect for specs/reds

My suggestion, do lots or reading, and asking questions .. including on the OB. If there are no dedicated fly fishing shops in LC, it wouldn't hurt to find someone local who is experienced or visit the Orvis shop in BR to examine and educate you on all the items you have. Since you're at the novice/beginning stage, act like a student and become a sponge.

FYI - I'm in the same boat as you right now. I recently purchased a "like new, used" fly rod & reel with several lures, I just need more hands on guidance and real world fishing experience.

That's what I'm doing. The OB has a fly fishing thread linked above. I'm chopping through it. I think I just need to get out there and practice in the field for a bit then on the water.

I actually looked that one up. My aunt didn't believe in buying cheap stuff.
