My last time out on the water I developed Photokeratitis, and let me tell you it really sucks. I personally don't like wearing sunglasses and usually only wear them at the range but I need to wear them on my boat from now on. Any recommendations (the internet votes Costas) or good budget glasses. I'd really hate to drop $200 on something I really don't want only to drop them over the side of the boat.

Budget - Suncloud ( made by Smith optics)

More expensive - Maui Jim

I wore Costas for years.

Last year I broke the pair I had and bought some cheap $25 Calcuttas because I was in a bind and needed glasses right then. They work just fine, and don't break the bank if you need a new pair.

Just from looking around Costa still dominates the among the people who are on the water professionally, and they still offer quality from inertia but I don’t know how long it’ll last. Native is a cheaper option but they’re both owned by Luxotica.

FWIW I have a variety of sunglasses (Smith, WileyX, Oakley, Ray Ban), only a couple that I paid for personally, and when I’m going kayak fishing I reach for the amber lens Costas every time.

I'm wearing some KastKing polariized and they seem pretty good.

But I've heard so many people swear how good Coatas are. I'm tempted to buy a pair because they offer pairs with cheaters, and I'm getting too damn old to squint when I'm tying on a lure.

I'm good about taking care of sunglasses, so I have no worries about spending the $200, I won't lose them or drop them.

But, are they really THAT much better?

I'm a fan of Maui Jims.

Glass is better. I have a few pair of Costas and they're good, but Maui's are better.

Also, Ray Ban has some good ones.

Not happy with mine. Yes, free replacement, but mine have already snapped twice just from putting them on my head. Never again.

They used to be, similar to how Surefire used to be THE option if you wanted a bright, tough flashlight. I doubt the gap is that big these days, as long as you realize that nobody’s making a $20 pair of glasses that’s “just as good” as a $200 pair. Now a $100 pair? Probably.

Being and old man, I use Costas and Maui Jim bi-focals and they both are decent - depends on what you are willing to spend.

So many options. I do want well made glasses, but I don't care about the name on the frame. If I need to spend a couple hundred to get a decent pair then I can and will, but I was hoping for something decent at a lower price point.

I'm in the process of selecting a new pair of Costa's. Anyone have experience with both plastic and glass lenses? Thinking of upgrading to glass but was looking for local reviews.

Try Hobie. I bought a pair of polarized for about $80. I did use a pair of the Calcutta after I lost my old pair in the surf at the beach. They did fine for the price, but eventually got scratched up. Lenses on the Hobie held up much better.

This. Still love my (old) Costas, but Calcutta’s are solid.

And cheap. Don’t get pissed when I mess them up.
