Ascend FS12T is pretty much the go-to starter yak.

I too have a Ascend FS12T and it works very well. Caught a couple bull reds out of it last year, and i'm taking it to GI next weekend in hopes of catching more

Ascend makes a few varieties but the FS12T is the one you want, it's 12' long.

One thing to consider though is how firm are you on that $600 budget? What I mean is the FS12T is $549.99, add on tax, a paddle, and any other things you deem necessary and you'd be around $700.

I've heard alot of bad things about the FS12T's (Leaks like a fish). I was in the same budget market as you. I would check craigslist for a used Native, Wilderness Systems or Ocean Kayak. I picked up a 12' Native Manta Ray here in houston for $700 and it came with a werner paddle and rigged to fish already. Goodluck with your search. Check out texaskayakfisherman.com

i got a Manta Ray 14' off eBay for $400 from Jackson, MS a few years back. Greatest kayak ever. Liked it so much I bought another off CL in Sebastopol last year, for $500. Superfast, tracks well and is a fishing machine.

Thing is, you can spend $500-600 on a new Ascend, or get a higher quality used boat for the same price if you search around for awhile. Try SearchTempest. Will show all CL and eBay items within a certain driveable radius.

This is true as well, you just have to be patient, and when you see a deal jump on it because odds are others are trying to beat you to it. A couple months ago there was a Slayer 12 and a KC12 in Lafayette for $600 each, that was a steal. Ocassionally there's deals to be had.

No kayak yet. One day I'll give in to the peer pressure.

First off, always try before you buy! Most retailers have demo days once a month. In addition, some retailers will lend you a boat to demo. Also, the kayak clubs (Bayou Coast, Lafayette Kayak Fishing Club, Bayou Pirates) have paddle days or tournaments where you can try members boats.

If you put off buying until September, there's a couple new sit-on-top yaks that will be competing against the Ascend, both under $750 and with an adjustable frame seat, electronic (fishfinder) pod and transducer scupper, built-in gear tracks and large tankwells. The Pelican Catch 120 and the Perception Pescador 120 Pro. Both will be faster than the Ascend.
