Fisherman slams set of pilings coming in after dark

After finally deciding to head back, Landry and his brother scooted west in Unknown Pass, intending to cross Lake Catherine and the Rigolets and dock at Landry's house. The boat would never make it that far, however.
"I was coming out of Unknown Pass and veered to the right," Landry said. "I was following the trail I came in on on my GPS. My brother and I were both looking out the front of the boat, but you couldn't see the black pilings against the black water."
Landry's 26-foot bay boat smashed against a set of pilings that used to support an oilfield platform.

"I'm very familiar with where those pilings are," Landry said. "When we hit them, we were both staring out the front of the boat, but just didn't see them."
Landry said the boat had been traveling at 29 mph, but came to a complete stop when it contacted the pilings. The impact forced the bow of the boat into the air at an almost 90-degree angle, causing Landry and his brother to slide back on top of the baitwell.
Both 200-horsepower outboards were completely submerged.

That doesn't look like a bay boat to me

Twin 300'S and he'd have made the jump...

Lucky they aren't dead. Looks like the hull might be able to be salvaged. Might have some holes in the bottom though.
Posted on 10/31/16 at 5:30 pm to WPBTiger
damn, if in a smaller boat and they would be dead as shite

You just don't run WOT in the dark, regardless of how many times you've covered that route.
You just don't rely on your past GPS tracks in the dark, regardless of how many times you've covered that route.
Put someone with a fricking Q beam on the bow once the sun goes down.
Captain should have been a Darwin award winner. Maybe next time.

I'm all about the idea that these dudes shouldn't have been running at night in (apparently) unfamiliar waters, but this is a problem that I'm seriously tired of reading about:
Drilling, dredging, and offshore companies and operators HAVE to start being held accountable for shite like this. Not only does it cause damage to property, but it's damn dangerous. Three weeks ago, a friend of mine ripped his lower unit off on an unmarked dredge pipe that was laid a month before in open water. He got the operator info from Sea Tow, loaded his boat up, and trailered it straight to their office with the coordinates to the pipe. Hopefully they'll pay up, but we'll see how that goes.
About three months ago, a guide buddy of mine tore his lower unit off running through a bayou in low water on a submerged metal support system for an old platform. Who knows how long it had been there or which company was responsible for it. Nothing he could do but claim insurance.
Seriously, this shite has gone on for long enough, but no politician in this state has the balls to hold these companies (particularly oil companies) responsible.
This should be #1 on the list of things NOT to do running open water at night. Learn how to navigate in the dark, and operate your boat the proper way depending on the conditions. There's a reason nav lights are red and green. Nothing screams kook more than a dude in a $25k duck boat running through a big bay with his light bar on. Not the place for that.

Who are we blinding? Those things are directional. Gotta spot check every now and then.

Who said he was running WOT? With twin 200's I would think WOT would be faster than 29mph?

Yeah, no.
We had some dumb arse behind us at night in south pass. No nav lights, no radar, just a big blaring white light
Coasties grabbed them as we headed into the marina

Depends what you mean by open water I guess. Sometimes you may be in a big arse open bay but you need the light to see the canals through the submerged grass. Running with lights full on all the time is dumb tho. It actually makes it harder to see certain shite.
Basically the answer is to have a q beam on tap for when you need to see something, and using it judiciously.

Jesus, really?
The marina will be lit plenty enough where a spot isn't needed, idiot.
Only a fool runs at night without throwing a light ahead from time to time to check for debris/dangers. Nav lights won't show if something is in the water, they exist so others can determine your course.

Miles? I think I saw the picture. Insurance is a must. He has a very nice rig too.

Actually everyone that owns/operates a pipeline in coastal area pays an annual fee to the state that goes to "fishermen gear fund". Is it enough is debatable, but my point is there is a mechanism currently in place for people to make claims based on damage from oil field equipment.
