My Eagle is dying. I am overwhelmed by the choices here. It will be mounted on a bay boat center console. Are the 5s still a good option? Use will be bass/crappie. Need user friendly, as I've never really understood how to use these things properly. Please tell me what to get and why I shouldn't get a lesser model than recommended.

if putting in a center console id recommend at least a 7 size. I have a lowrance hds 7 in my bay boat and had a elite 7 hdi in my xpress bay boat.

I had a 5 for about 2 weeks and sold it. its too small in my opinion. that being said you can get a lowrance hdi 7 pretty cheap right now or the new hook 7 for about 500$ the 5s run a little bit cheaper.

they are user friendly as well. very easy to navigate and set up for fishing.

they also take mapping cards for aerial imagery. I can make a card for you of any area you want or areas you fish. I have the whole coast from texas to Alabama from the interstate down. also have cenla lakes as well.

you can get one for about 500$ or less unless you wanna spend some cheese and get the hds but sounds like you don't need that. let me know if you have any questions I can shoot you an email

I say get an elite(old model)/hook 7 as well. I have 2 Elite 7 chirps on my boat and have no complaints.

My cousin received a Hook 5 from his wife as a birthday present recently for use while bass/ sac au lait fishing. So far he loves it. Has no complaints and uses it quite a bit.

As long as my cup holders can still fit, then I can give that a go.

Wow, that would be cool. Toledo?

I don't really understand the difference between hdi, hook and that other line. alxtgr.ssp at gmail

Nope, this board loves lowrance. Might as well be a Tikka.

I just got rid of my HDS and replaced it with a Helix7. Couldn't be happier.

Humminbird Helix 7 with side imaging. I mostly fish for crappie and the side imaging has made a world of difference. Only downside to Humminbird is the mapping card options but I find most lakes I fish aren't available through Lowrance or Humminbird. If you move up to the helix 9 it has auto chart live which maps the area you are fishing while on the water.

The helix 7 also has autochart capabilities. You just have to pay extra for it.

I went from a Eagle to a HDS with no issue.
I do like the elite units though. I would go with either of those since you are familiar with Eagle.

Im interested.

The main reason I haven't bought yet is because I don't know what I would use and how to use what I would use.

I definitely recommend the 7 if you can afford. The 5 gets small when you're browsing the charts, especially on a lake like Toledo bend where you have to zoom so far out to find the next cove that all the contour lines run together.
Also buy Hotmaps card. You can play online here

There a card in my current Eagle. No idea if it will be compatible with a new unit.

IIRC Eagle is same as Lowrance so it may be compatible but I'm not positive.

Now it's looking like Hook vs. Ti.
