I deal with breeders from time to time for hunting dogs when health and pedigrees are very important. However, the vast majority of pet owners are buying dogs based on their looks and not their function. With the large expenses, rampant health issues from inbreeding on the rise, etc there is no reason for someone like yourself, who is looking for a companion, to buy a pure breed. Save your money and save a good dog by adopting. When you come back looking for a good hog dog, duck dock, quail dog etc. then we can discuss in detail those things. I wouldn't pick a malinois, shepherd, or lab as my couch companion, but even if you are, there's one in the shelter that looks exactly like the dog you want and will make a great pet. I went to the BR shelter 3 times a week for 2 months before I found a female puppy I wanted. She's been perfect.

Do you think the chewing and stuff is bred into the dogs

I think it's just what lab puppies do. I've never known one that didn't, whether it was a $1500 or $5 dog (TK & Mike reference).

Yeah, he's lacking something in his mouth to chew, so he finds the closest object with the highest monetary value.

dude, go to the shelter. you will have this dog for a long time so choose wisely unlike you did with that shitty catahoula you got a few years ago. make sure its well behaved. go to the shelter multiple times to see if they have new dogs. check the newspaper and go to other shelters in your area. I know that spca on the west bank is kindof small. I live in houston so I had like 7 or 8 shelters to shop at. shop around the different shelters and find the dog that fits your needs. they're are plenty of ones that would love to jog with you.

out of those, i would get the malinois. dont get a german shepherd. almost every german shepherd ive met, i didnt really like but thats just me. Don't get a fricking lab. they shed, they stink, they're dumb, and they're ubitquitous throughout the south. get something unique.

I have a Blue Lacy that's very smart but don't care nothing for hunting. Very loyal dogs and no trouble at all with kids.

Not true. I been having them many years as inside/outside dogs. You just have to work them hard every day.

Now they do drop a lot of hair. Baths are no problem if you teach them when they are pups. Also, NEVER hold them when they are a pup and sit in a chair. That gives them the ok to do it later in life.

Labs wont tear your house up if you actually put forth the effort to teach them not to. People get dogs, bring them home, feed them every day and thats it. They dont take the time to work with them, train them, get their energy out, give them lots of toys to chew on, etc. We have a 6 month old lab and he has not done a single bit of damage to my house. We just finished his 2nd round of obedience classes last night he is a stud compared to the other dogs in there. The others cant sit still, wont listen, etc. where as ours is very well behaved. You have to put effort into raising a puppy just like you would raising a child, or they will tear shite up and make you hate life.

I've had labs most of my life, I had a Heinz 57 that was awesome. But dumb the are not, smell only if you keep them caged in a box. Yes they chew, but name one breed that doesn't at some point? If you're going to have a family hands down lab is the breed. I had one that would guard my son when he first started walking. The Dolly Lama kept watch over him the entire time, when he fell she'd get up walk over grab the back of his Osh Kosh's stand him up and return to her spot. By far the coolest shite I've ever seen I a dog do.

How dare you come in here trying to spew common sense about taking time to raise a puppy. Don't you know they automatically stink and chew up anything of value like the little demons that they are?
