Different folks have different policies. Some offer to pay for the surgery while others will refund money plus give you a new pup. The biggest thing is you improve your odds of not having to go through that ordeal by having the parents certified. This is not an absolute that your pup will not develop hyp problems but your odds are way better than with a pup that you know nothing about the sire or dame.

so having both parents certified too would push the price up to about a grand?

I'm going to suggest the OP get a free half lab mutt. I'm a huge fan of mutts.

I have yet to have a dog with hyp problems that came from certified parents. None that I have owned or trained that is.

That and like I said the only people doing these test are the competition dogs. I have a 3 year old HRCH BLF that has a green light on hyps/eyes/EIC. If she was a lap dog I would have never spent the money on getting those test done. The certifications are ussually done to prove to the owner of the stud that you're not going to ruin the reputation of the stud who has passed all test. The other part of it is you want to sell a pup that is all that it should be if you are going to continue to breed dogs and have a good reputation. You will not see the dogs I am speaking of in a shelter. The newspaper and wal-mart parking lot pups are what ends up giving dog breeders a bad name.

yea, well this dog will most likely be a couch buddy, go jogging every day, and just hang out.

thats what we have done with all our labs

but our last one had major hip problems

which direction do you recommend i go in knowing what the dog will be doing now?

You're not getting a dog for a specific task, according to your OP, and would be better off just adopting a mutt for about $60.

These will kill every other dog that comes around. I don't trust them around chirrens. But if you get one, take it to the dog park and feed it a chihuahua.

Then why the hell are you talking about paying $1000? You can get a finished dog that won't eat your house for $2000.

And whoever said his lab didn't chew his house up must have never left for work while that SOB was a puppy. I've had 3 in my adult life and I'm on my 4th recliner, if that says anything. Hell, I had one get on the counter and eat a 5 Lb box of FROZEN chicken breasts from inside the package in the time I went to use the restroom. I came back into the kitchen to find the yellow Sanderson Farms styrofoam boat sitting next to him on the floor.

And I wouldn't pay $5000 for a surgery to fix a dog if he shite cold beer and Copenhagen snuff.

Go to the animal shelter a few times a week and you'll find one you love by Christmas. $60 for a chip, shots, and spay/neuter. The poster Burt Reynolds just picked up a red catahoula last month and she is awesome.

With all that you have said I would go with the BM

I have labs because I duck hunt. When I say I duck hunt I mean it is a part of my life. Having a BM as a guard dog/running buddy would be hands down my choioce.

Do you think the chewing and stuff is bred into the dogs or that maybe the dog is lacking in something?
