I figured a good bit of you beer drankin, tobacco chewing, spicy eaters have the same problem as I.

I have a pretty tough time with GERD (not just regular heartburn). I get food stuck in my lower E all of the time and have to run to the restroom and make myself puke so that I don't choke. I don't think it's gas from my stomach making the food stop? I had a hiatal hernia about 8 years ago and haven't done anything for it, but take Prilosec.

Do Any of you have damage to your lower esophagus? Is that even possible? Any of you had any type of procedures to help other than medication?

TIA

The esophageal damage is definitely possible. I take nexium every single day or Im miserable... I tried the OTC stuff like Prilosec and Zantac but none of em last the day like prescription nexium and Prevacid.

You need to see your doctor and get set up for an upper endoscopy. Chronic reflux increases your risk for cancer of the esophagus. This needs to be checked ASAP. Medicines can mask the symptoms, but you better get checked.

I had this exact problem growing up, had over a dozen upper GI scopes, barium swallows, and countless other procedures.. I had a lot of problems with acid reflux causing scar tissue build up in my esophagus causing food to get stuck. Ultimately about 10 years ago I had a surgery called a nissen fundoplication(sp?) ...they basically take your stomach and tie it around your esphongaus... creating a new muscle at the base of your esphogaus to prevent acid from coming up. Surgery wasn't bad... About 2 weeks recovery then slowly back to your normal self. Surgery worked wonders for me and would recommend it. See a gastro doc and talk to him about it

That is the best first post I have ever seen on TD. And at such an odd hour.

Only on the OB.

Great first post!

I also have GERD and am on omeprazole (the active ingredient in Prilosec). A few things cause it to flare up at times and I'll pop a Pepcid complete to bring the Ph to a more normal level.

I also had the endoscope procedure and they just found some redness since the ranitidine I was taking wasn't doing the job. I would definitely see a gastro doctor.

My brother has torn his esophagus twice. Weakened from reflux.

Throat tears

Bleeds into stomach

Throw up blood

Err body freaks out
