Have you fed the squirrels in your backyard? Was there a population explosion? Did they get into your attic or do other damage? Would you advise against it?

I used to set out corn for them. Like this one.

Never had a problem with them getting into my attic or anything. The biggest problem I had was raccoons climbing the tree to get to the corn.

ETA: I don’t know if there was a population explosion. I already had a lot of squirrels in the back yard. But they would devour 3-4 cobs in a day. That could get expensive.

I put a handful of peanuts on the fence everyday. Between the squirrels and blue jays they don't last long. as Fall rolls around they begin to hide the peanuts around the yard. I like squirrels, possums I can live without.

Feed them. Gain their trust. Send a pellet through their skull.

Then cook some rice.

When my wife asked why I wanted to feed the squirrels, I replied “to fatten them up for the stew”.

She hated that answer

Personally, I wouldn't do it if I were you. You get them in the habit of eating in your yard now and it gets imprinted in them that you are supplying a source or food.

A few years down the line you or your wife decides to grow a little vegetable garden, and guess what----yep, you're feeding the squirrels and all that hard work is for naught.

They're a pain in the arse. My wife likes to put out bird feeders. Squirrels eat most of the feed. In our last house they started knocking flower pots off the porch and chewed through the insulation on some wires. After that I "harvested" about 30 of them with a pellet gun and that cut down on the problems.

So far, at our new house, they haven't done much more than eat the bird seed and dig in my wife's flowers a little. I've taken a couple out that got too comfortable, but this neighborhood isn't as easy to shoot in.

for every squirrel you feed in the day - there are 5 rats at night.

Amen, brother. Amen. They have been terrible for me this year. The last two years our garden has been great and no pest problems. This year the squirrels have been out of control.

I was in my kitchen the other day and spied one of those bastards on a branch. That motherfricker had an entire eggplant he had carried up the tree. I grabbed my air rifle and made sure it was his last meal.

I feed them daily. I buy a sunflower seed mix and a huge bag of peanuts (still in shell) from Petsmart. I put them on my porch to lure them far away from the trees so my Yorkie can go apeshit and chase them. It’s a daily ritual that we thoroughly enjoy. Never noticed any population growth. Only problem I had with them getting into the attic was after Katrina when some vinyl soffit was missing and they had easy access. No problems since then.
