Real world shooting trumps all this gelatin, laboratory bull$hit.
Gunfights don't occur in a lab or inside gelatin (at least not usually).
Real world shooting King is still the Federal .357B. All sorts of compromises have to be made for semi-autos - for cycling, magazine feeding, etc., but they have come a long, long way.
In any event, Bapple is right - to a point. It's personal preference to great degree with a handgun, anyway. You pick the platform and cartridge that you can reliably draw, fire and score consistent hits.
A handgun is a "good enough gun" in the first place - meaning a gun that gives you the opportunity, perhaps, to fight your way to "real" gun (i.e. a rifle or a shotgun). So, a single hit with a .22lr is better than any number of misses with .357 magnum.
Having said that - your chances of stopping a gunfight with a single hit, assuming comparable loadings in each caliber (not .45 ACP ball to high end, 21st century 9mm +P, JHP, etc.) are greater with .357 magnum and .45 ACP, versus .40 S&W, .357 Sig or 9mm Parabellum - which are conversely greater than with .38 Special .380, 9mm Mak, .32, etc. at least if you're basing it on real world shootings. But the differences (somewhat subtle to begin with) are smaller, particularly from 9mm Parabellum on up, than they have ever been.

Indeed, weapons manipulation and what I like to call "kinetic marksmanship" win the day!
It doesn't matter whether you have a .22 Ruger single-six or a Desert Eagle. If you can't bring that weapon to bear and score hits before an opposing combatant does, then your chances of surviving the fight plummet precipitously.

Shot to heart and 9's to blame, FBI gelatin test gives 40 a bad name.

Because when you're forced to use non-expanding ammo (FMJ), bigger bullet = bigger hole.
And thanks Rattle for putting that song in my head.

What I don't like about these studies is that they don't factor in that improvement in technology doesn't apply only to the 9mm.
How do they not factor it in? You think they were shooting legacy rounds for all the other calibers?

Recoil yes but performance no.
Lots of recoil sensitive little men here. Glad I'm a bigger man.

Maybe it's just men who favor performance over unnecessary faux-masculinity...

40 S&W 135 grains Nosler Jacketed Hollow Point.
Muzzle Velocity: 1442 fps
Muzzle Energy: 623 ft. lbs.
9mm 124 grains Speer Gold Dot
Muzzle Velocity: 1090 fps
Muzzle Energy: 327 ft. lbs.
I agree, I'll take performance over it too.

The hate for .40 is puzzling. Seems emotional to me. It's the only round I've shot in years and years, and with virtually no experience, i shot it just fine even with girlie desk job hands.
