I think your generalization of this story is kinda of disturbing. I would think PETA will chime in on this little video.

You can see and hear suffering in the animal. Any true outdoorsman worth his weight in corn does not enjoy animal suffering. A decent outdoorsman, even when killing, tries to do so in a way that reduces the suffering in the animal.

Having compassion does not make me feel less manly.

For me, if you want to control the hog population, shoot it in the head for an instant kill. I have no problem with population control of a nuisance animal.
Baiting it to die slowly at the hands of a gator is pretty sick honestly.

Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered, don't be a hog.

With that being said, I am not a fan of a tour guide doing this with unsuspecting customers...

I think what's so disturbing about this video is that it was caused by humans. I am ok if the gator hunted it's prey and caught it, but some idiot is throwing the marshmallows enticing the little piggy to get closer to the gator. I felt bad for the little piggy's family that had to watch this and will be traumatized by the water now.

Well if PETA is on the other side of the argument, I feel pretty good about the side I am on.

I am all for killing hogs, and I fully understand the damage that they cause. However, as others have stated, a true outdoorsman should never intentionally bring suffering to an animal, especially for entertainment purposes. I was always taught to go for the most ethical and quickest kill.

Also,

does not justify what happened in the video. If this is what he has to do to show people the swamp, then his tours probably aren't that good anyway.

$5 will get you $10 this video will be picked up by some group who takes issue with baiting the pig into the water and the tour guide/company gets fined or even shut down over this.

Might make for good theater, but I think its a poor business decision to bait the pig. Not everyone thinks its cool or appreciates the pig's status as a nuisance.

Reflects poorly on the character of the operator of that boat.

I am an a-hole for not "caring" about the pig's emotional state.

quote:

Same outdoorsman buys his pork at Rouses, where it came from a farm, trapped in a 4'x2' pen for its entire life being fed from a bucket and shitting on itself. I choose not to be a hypocrite when it comes to stuff like that.

quote:

I agree that a quick kill is important, but just because I don't get emotionally upset if an animal suffers does not make me a bad outdoorsman.

I consider myself a compassionate person in regard to humans and pets. Farm animals and wild animals are another story.

The alligator didn't look like he suffered at all.

Even if the nuisance status was a foregone conclusion that everyone agreed on, is not right to end an animal's suffering as quickly as possible? That's what my old man always told me, and he was no saint.

Hell, when I trap a rat by a leg or whatnot I always chop off the head to kill it quick, I don't just dump it in the trash mortally wounded.

A lot of pansies in this thread. Sportsman use live bait all around the world. It's a damn hog for Gods sake. Gators gotta eat somethin and he sure ain't gonna be a tree shaker by eating marshmallows all day.

Y'all are the guys who leave the PETA comments under Facebook videos huh?

I'm not in here trying to defend the guy with my life, just expressing my opinion on it like everyone else. Do I think it's kinda weird? Sure, but I see nothing wrong with it at all.
