Educate me on mud motors-New question at bottom

I am getting a 14' flat boat from my pops and I am trying to decide on a motor. I like the idea of having a surface drive, but a used long tail or conventional outboard is closer to my budget though.
The boat won't be for running in mud, like some videos I have seen, but shallow water, down to a couple of feet for sure.
I found JB Mud Motors. The 7hp model is $1500, which is a lot cheaper than the Copperheads and Mud Buddys. It is a chain drive. Is that the norm for surface drives? What about a Dixie?
So anyway tell me what you know. Is there any brand to stay away from? Belts on any mud motor a bad idea? Any info would be great.

I wouldnt buy a mud motor with chain. I have had 4 mud motors now. All have been prodrives except my motor I have now on my layout boat

Well then I guess it sort of depends on what you are looking for. Neutral, reverse, speed. Like TunaTime said you'll have to pay a premium for all these things. I would definitely go surface drive over long tail.

Based on what you said, a surface drive is out of your range. For longtails, I would suggest a godevil, mainly because I have one and it runs well. When you start to read up on the other brands you may find some negative comments/reviews, but they are still good motors and are surely cheaper than a godevil.

The Pro Drives and Mud Buddys look like they would be too big for my boat. The smallest they make is a 23 or 27, I think.
Copperhead, Dixie and this new company I found, JB, all make the smaller surface drives.
Is a 7hp SD enough motor?
What about hp on a long tail? I was thinking 12-16???

I have a 14x36 flat boat, and a 5hp homemade go devil. It goes, but not very fast. I have been looking around for a decent 10-15hp one, and figure that would work

Yes the prodrive/mud buddy/gatortail will all be too big. I've heard that copperheads are nice little lightweight motors. I have never heard of JB before to be honest. I have heard both good and bad things about the Dixie. For hp purposes, how wide is your boat?

It's either a 36" or 42" bottom. I would lean toward the 36"

In general, skinnier boats are better for longtails. I think the largest hp longtail I would put on there would be a 16hp. For a surface drive, the most I would hp I would get would be a 12hp.

If $1500 is your max, you might want to go with a longtail. It won't be as fast but it will prolly be hard to find a decent, small surface drive for that price.

I found a used 9hp Briggs go-devil for $750. Will that be enough for my 14' 42" jon boat? not looking for speed, just getting there.

I had a 9.5hp outboard on my 14 foot jon and it would push in in the high teens with just me in it. A buddies 7.5hp outboard pushed it 13 with me and him in it. FWIW

I had a 14x36 one with a 5 on it. It was a long tail though, and I didn't take it in mud that often, just submerged logs and stuff. It would run maybe 10 if I had to guess with me and a buddy.
Been looking for a >10hp Vanguard or similar on CL lately though. I'd imagine it would run 15-20
