I was speaking with a breeder today about catahoula puppies. The breeder said the type of dog food you feed it can impact shedding and smell. Basically they implied the better the food the less shedding and smell a dog will have. Anyone have any knowledge of this? Experience with catahoulas?

Could you ask him what kind of food I need to eat to keep the same from happening to me?

Personal experience with a hound/lab mix. Fed pedigree dog food and was constantly scooping shite out the yard, would smell after a few days(I thought that was typical hound shite) and would put and egg in the food once a week to shine up the. Brushed a lot to handle up on shedding, which wasn’t terrible.

Swapped to victor hi-pro plus. Not near the amount of turds in the yard, if any sometimes, could probably let her go a month without a bath if I wanted(I don’t) and her coat is beautiful with nothing extra added to the food. She seems to be a healthier weight/build also. I’m going to feed the better food as long as I can help it.

Its very true, the cheap stuff is absolute crap full of fillers and by-products. The expensive stuff is fantastic, but costs an arm and a leg. I shoot for somewhere in the middle.

Me also, been doing well with Diamond naturals skin and coat. Any time I've fed anything other than chicken I've seen improvement in skin, shedding, allergies etc. many different types of dogs also.

I feed Pro Plan Sport (Performance) to my Labs. On a kilocalorie basis you actually come out feeding about the same amount of calories as larger amounts of cheap food.

I once did an analysis and as I remember you could feed almost twice as much Old Roy as a performance food.
It was actually almost the same $$$

Our dog eats old fridge food, grass, road kill, and the cheapest bag of food I can find a petsmart. He's a mut rescue that was found roaming the street. He's 11 years old now, sleeps outside, in great health, runs around still, and will likely outlive us all.

Meh, Purina Green bag or Pedigree yellow bag is all I ever feed. Chances are really good that my dogs are better than your dogs.

I used to feed my lab Purina Pro Plan and that shite is garbage. Gas, constant spit ups, clear flem, hershey squirts all the time. I changed to better food (Abound, Blue, etc.) and those issues all went away. His coat is shiny and healthy. He remains energetic and youthful. No gut issues at all. I found out that Purina adds a lot of synthetic shite in their food, even their "better" food.

I have a catahoula and a close friend who had one for 7 years until it recently died of cancer. Great dogs, but you have to train them and be active with them. They are not house pets for your friends children to love on. If you like to be outside and in the woods a lot then that dog will be your best friend. Catahoula’s test you constantly so you have to be the alpha male EVERY DAMN DAY. I don’t feed mine anything in particular but his smell and shedding have never bothered me. He rides shotgun in my truck everywhere we go and is a hit at every hunting camp he has been to but he will tear shite up if he doesn’t get exercise

My papaw kept catahoula cow dogs. They were excellent dogs. He would open a gate and leave it open and if a cow tried to go through it, the cow would be bleeding somewhere. He could talk to them like a human and it seemed like they knew exactly what he’s was saying.

Our GSP had no issues on Victor. Put it then got pulled due to contamination issues. Grabbed some 4health and he was reacting to it. Hives, itching, etc. Grabbed a bag from Sam’s with lamb and he’s been doing fine. Hopefully Victor hits the shelves again soon.

I don't know about local stores but Chewy has Victor back in stock. My Ridgeback get Hi-Pro Plus and my Bassets get Multi-Pro. We switched to 2 versions of Diamond Naturals during the time Victor was unavailable everything seemed fine other than their stool was looser.

Dogfooddvisor has specific recs for Catahoulas and Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete is the least expensive 5 star food on the list.

Poster above nailed it. They need activity. Mine rides shotgun everyday all day, swims, runs, and chases shite. Do not leave them in a cage or house all day. We Roux proof our house before we leave. The Rougarou is a black and tan colored catahoula. Her dad was a show dog that got half his ear licked off. Her mom was a hog dog. I got her when my son was born almost 6 years ago. She was going to be his dog. She is my dog. She is latched on to me. She is great with my almost 6 year and also my 1.5 year old. She bonded to me and goes everywhere I go. I dare you to try to open my truck or house door. She hasn’t bit anyone, but lots of people have shite themselves walking close to the truck. She’s as sweet as she can be outside of the truck and house. She’s has caught multiple squirrels and found multiple deer. She’s also the smartest, most stubborn dog I’ve ever been around. Total opposite of a lab. Roo Roo as my little one says is a great member of our family.
