I haven't heard of the instructor but I agree with dawg. Even if the instructor does have impressive credentials, if she's not on LSP's instructor list then the class won't be valid for a permit.

I still think it's awesome that we have females teaching handgun classes and I'm sure Mrs. Midnight would benefit.

I have never felt that I've wasted a dime on any good defensive firearm course. If she's well-known I'm sure your wife would benefit.

Plus if you let her use your Sig, I'm sure there will be an excuse to buy another one...

I may have the P229 converted to 9mm by then, so there might be an "either/or" option. But, this is the final step in my little scheme for a standard platform, standard caliber and common spares (except maybe for the CCW guns, which may end up being P239s ).

What about the facility in Robert, that's Advantage, right? I think the course is through their website.

So I would take the class then go to the state police and finish the process, pay the dues, and just wait on the permit to come in?

correct. you will need a pistol to complete the class, but you said you had that S&W so no problem there.

I was looking at the shield. I looked at the ruger 380 lcp and it seems to have a good bit of kick, more than I want in a carry gun,

Shield is well liked on the interwebs. Never shot one personally but I bet it's a solid choice. Any "carry" gun (small) will have a lot of kick...just a matter of physics.

Dawg - do you know anything about this course? I know that Mrs. Midnight is going to be more comfortable in a women's only class. I'd like her to be more prepared, tactically, and going to an indoor range is just that - going to an indoor range. It isn't preparing for combat.
I really don't know anything about the class -- I do know Whitlock teaches a couple of "women only" classes (one is more for home defense and the other called "defensive handgun").

In a Level I (beginner) class there's not likely to be a lot of material presented that couldn't be covered in an indoor facility.

I certainly understand that the womens are more comfortable in an all-woman class (ask my wife, who likes to travel to Texas or north Louisiana for Girl-and-a-Gun and Babes & Bullets classes). And they certainly pay more attention to anybody besides their husbands (check with my wife on this one, too).

Will the actual instruction be better than what she'd get from Tom Givens or Clint Smith? I doubt it. BUT, she may well get more out of this class than she would from a mixed-gender class.

So it'll be money well-spent, assuming the instructor teaches sound doctrine -- and I certainly assume that she will be.

Is there a web site I can go to and get some info on this. I would like to show the wife and se if she is interested. She has her CCL already.

One thing that used to be in effect in Texas was that if you went through the concealed carry class with a revolver you could only carry a revolver. If you did with a pistol you could carry either type. You had to break it down and re-assemble but it was worth it.

Not sure how it is in Louisiana.

It may not be the best thing to bring the weapon you will carry if it is small. I was going to use a friends gun for the class because it was a large pistol.

Advantage Group Calendar

And, as I read the course, this appears to be the home defense course, but I'm not 100% certain.

Yea that's the Advantage range but I haven't heard of that instructor. They still have solid classes though. I'm sure she'll learn a lot of good stuff.

It's the same way in AR, but not in LA.
