Do I get a CCL first or buy a conceal gun first? Advice needed!

So I just got my first gun a few weeks ago, SW SD9. I had been toying with the idea of getting one for a few years, looking at the SD9 a lot. It was bought for me as a birthday present, I just picked it out. I wanted something basic and easy to shoot, and so far I have really enjoyed shooting it. I wanted something to just get comfortable with gun wise and be safe with as well. I definitely want to get a conceal permit, especially since my gf has cp and is in a wheelchair and cannot really protect herself. I also want to have a gun around the house when we move in together just in case, kinda thinking it will be the SD9 that I have now. So really my question is what do I do first...get the permit or buy a gun for conceal carry? Thanks for any input you guys have!

Seriously don't carry that gun. And buy a gun and practice before you get a permit.
My suggestion is always S&W Shield.

you should apply for a chp first and then have a minimum of 3 months or more wait time to shop for you gun next.

My CHL took like a year to go through, so I just did it anyway

So I can't just take a class, pass, then go to the sheriffs office finish the rest, and have a permit pretty quickly?

The application process is quite backed up now with recent events so expect the turnaround time to take a few months after you've completed your training and online registration. Also, the concealed handgun permitting process is handled by Louisiana State Police, not the Sheriff's office.
I'd advise getting a nice carry gun first then do the class and permitting since it will take much longer. And my suggestion is the same as chat's.

this
get the ball rolling on the CCL ASAP, because it takes for ever. Next get yourself a quality carry pistol. personally I like glock, but S&W and Kahr are nice as well.
Throw some night sites on it and wear that fricker out at the range. Shoot until you get blisters.

I am open to taking the class first. So I would take the class then go to the state police and finish the process, pay the dues, and just wait on the permit to come in? I was looking at the shield. I looked at the ruger 380 lcp and it seems to have a good bit of kick, more than I want in a carry gun,

You do the registration online but still have to go to LSP to get fingerprinted. But yes that's the gist of it.

Any small carry gun is going to be a compromise because the smaller you make the gun the harder it will be to shoot accurately. The LCP is a pocket carry gun whereas the Shield is better inside the waistband. The Shield will also be considerably easier to shoot since it's a big bigger. But know that any smaller gun than a full sized handgun will be more difficult to shoot.
The same goes for full sized guns - it is one of the best handgun sizes for shootability, capacity, low felt recoil, etc. but it's also considerably larger than a compact or subcompact. Some people conceal full sized guns but for most it will eventually be left at home. There's always a compromise between comfort and shootability.

Bap - what's the ruling on a woman carrying in her purse? Does she need CCL?

In Louisiana that would be considered concealed so yes. Although a state like Mississippi recently passed a law for permitless purse carry.
I'm not a big fan of purse carry though. There have been cases of children shooting themselves or their parents with a purse-carried gun. Plus purse snatchings are so violent that they probably wouldn't be able to draw the gun in time anyway.

Thanks for the info.
Don't forget, you need to get a Q series holster for the Shield and do a gear review.

Bap - what about this upcoming class for women only with Tatiana Whitlock in Robert on October 1 & 2?
I know that is a beginner level, 2-day class, but I'm considering sending Mrs. Midnight to this (with a Sig P226, instead of her old-fashioned wheelgun).
Is it worth the money? I know you haven't taken a women's only course, but you might be familiar with this (I guess she's national-level, NRA, right?) instructor and what they do at the course. It's $475.
ETA: Does it go without saying this class will qualify Mrs. Midnight for a CHL?

I'd be surprised if that class would qualify her for a carry permit -- unless (a) Tatiana or an assistant is on the LSP list of approved instructors and (b) she teaches the topics required by LSP, including La. laws.

Dawg - do you know anything about this course? I know that Mrs. Midnight is going to be more comfortable in a women's only class. I'd like her to be more prepared, tactically, and going to an indoor range is just that - going to an indoor range. It isn't preparing for combat.
(ETA: And I think you're right about the CHL - if it qualified, I think they'd mention it in the description as selling point, particularly at that price - the Robert training site has CHL classes for $180.)

I just mailed off my completed packet this morning so now I wait.
In the meantime I practice with my XDS9 I bought a few months ago. I went to the range a few times, and I practice concealing and drawing from my IWB holster around the house and my own yard.

If you mailed it, you're gonna be waiting at least 3-6 months

It's pathetic that people have to have this mentality.
