And for some reason, one gun might love one load and the other gun hates it.

Buckshot is funky, but winchester seemed to be most consistently liked at our camp. Flite control federal came our after we had all gotten rifles unfortunately.

I can't decide if the old men would have liked the flite control shot or not. It might pattern too tight for their liking. It's incredible how tight it patterns.

I made 7 in row! 00 has an immense shock value compared to #1 buckshot. And that's what kills deer on the spot.
Could care less if you hunt with with a lawn dart.

One of the places we hunt allows only shotgun but no single projectile for their limited firearm seasons. So slugs aren’t allowed. We have had really good success with 3” 4B buckshot out of a turkey choke. Patterns well and very effective out to 55-60 yds

The only deer on my wall was killed with a borrowed 12 gauge w/ 00 buck, sitting in a borrowed tree stand.

My college roommate, who I borrowed everything from, calls it my "borrowed deer." Pretty 8 pt w/ 18" spread.

I killed a small 8pt with 000BK. The pellets did not pass through so there was very little blood for trailing. But luckily it only went like 20 yds so I eventually found it in some thick brush.

Flite control needs a cylinder choke. They all used fixed chokes in the old days so that wouldn’t have turned out well.

12 ga 3" mag Federal Sabot slug rifled 50 Cal 300 grain. Deadly at 100 yds. 0 buckshot for close range. But what do I know, I've been killing them for 50 years. Most shots in the woods are less than 50 yds.

Best of luck ..... History of 50 yrs hunting tells me you are getting lucky with pellet placement. Had a good buddy shoot a deer with #4 buckshot at around 37 yards.... Hit the deer with 3 pellets.... Two was close to the backbone paralyzing the deers back legs. One went through the breadbasket.... Drove 5 miles to my house and when we got back to the deer it was still alive and had crawled about 20 yards from the spot he shot it..... Look hunt with what y'all want to hunt with but nobody can dispute the shock and stopping power of 00 buckshot

Why didn't you kill the damn thing before you drove home?

Slugs have a lot more knockdown power inside 40 or 50 yards than do most rifles.

That power falls significantly after that.

I'm just here to LOL at the replies.

This is what happens when you ask about deer hunting with a shotgun on a message board where posters who ask "what deer rifle should I get?" are told they must have $5000 for an elephant rifle with the hubble telescope mounted on top of it to kill a deer inside 200 yards.

For what you've described, a shotgun loaded with slugs is an ideal setup. Just ask anyone who hunts shotgun only states or states with shotgun only areas or seasons, like Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maine, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, and Virginia.

No matter the weapon or the load, it’s all about shot placement. Whatever setup you decide to hunt with, put in the time to sight in / pattern the loads. Be confident in what you’re using, where to aim, and know your distance limitations. I won’t take a shot with my shotgun that’s too far. Not worth potentially wounding a deer.

Sorry someone hurt your feelings. Many folks on here have advocated for lighter calibers and lower power scopes. Deer aren’t that tough. A 12ga slug is gonna make them plenty dead, but unless you’re going all out shooting sabots it’s probably not going to exit reliably, typically the gun is gonna be long and unwieldy in the tree unless you go out and buy one specially for this, and it’s either gonna kick the everliving shite out of you or weigh 10 lbs. That’s far from ideal to me, but you do you.

The recoil doesn't get enough credit. 12ga slugs and buckshot are absolutely brutal on the shoulder

I’m lol’ing at your reply. In the states you mentioned, most are using rifled barrels on those shotguns, which take the effective range out to 100-150 yds or so.

Who? I hunt deer with .223 and varmint loads. Always have. Had posters swearing up and down I'm going to lose one.

In over 30 years, not one has made it 10ft from where it was shot. I was taught one bullet one deer. Don't take stupid shots.

I was also taught: if you do want to make stupid brush shots, shoot slugs

...you're one of those guys who shoots buck heavy loads with the same form as bird aren't you

If you don't need to prepare for a followup shot, relax your back muscles and deltoid. If you are still holding the gun tightly to your shoulder, your body will eat the recoil rather than the front of your shoulder.

Easier said than done muchacho. Swinging on a bird or clay is very different in felt recoil from shooting that same gun and load off a bench trying to maintain a fine point of aim, which is what you’re forced to do seated in a tree. You basically said the same thing, but it’s all the more reason why if you’re gonna aim and shoot a shotgun like a rifle, there’s very little reason not to just take a rifle unless the state is forcing you.

I'm fat, built in recoil pad.

I agree btw.

00 is great for old school dog hunting or deep swamp hunting.

I'd prefer a lever action for either at that point.

EDIT: Only reason I wouldn’t use a rifle is because there are so many tree tops down that I’m not sure a scope would work

All the more reason to use a rifle that will result in either a DRT or blood trail. Buckshot or slugs at 50-60 yd may not get a pass through and now you’re climbing around and over treetops looking for a deer that ran off 60-120yd with no blood trail.
If that’s the only gun you have then it will work but it’s not the best choice for that application.
If I was gonna put together a gun for just that it would be either a lever gun or short barreled rifle with either a lpvo scope or red dot.
