Not sure if we have a lot of green thumbs on this board, but I want to completely re-do my garden in front of my house. It's pretty small and just lines the front. Right now I have some small bushes surrounded by mulch.

I'd like to do some interesting stone work around the mulch, or take the mulch out completely. Anyone have any off the wall ideas or pictures?

It's a small space so I want to make it different and stand out a bit.

TIA

Varied plant height works really well for small areas. Large rock borders are cool, but can be a pain in the arse to keep grass out of. I just let grass grow between mine, and it looks like green mortar...kinda cool. Elevated planters (think sugar kettle) with spilling plants are also neat.

I love ornamental grasses. I just like the natural look of them, and you don't have to trim them, which is a huge plus in my mind. (I have hedges right now, and I cannot wait to pull those bastards out of the ground.)

You can mix many different textures, heights, and colors, which could make for a very interesting garden.

How big of an area? You can always put some type of waterfall fountain or little pond with exotic fish. Or put a goat in the garden and hope bayoudude's neighbors don't show up.

My grandma had an old toilet bowl in hers, but she was mentally ill later in life...

The flower beds I used to work would have a layer of mulch under a layer of pine straw with no borders to speak of, save the house and walkways. Broken flower pots look good, imo.

Yup, I think they look good, or you can just plant smaller flowers in them.

I'll get a picture of one of my rock borders tonight if I remember.

I would have their heads if anyone pulled shite like that on any type of animal I owned.

We're talking pretty small.

I have a fountain in the backyard, but definitely too small of an area in the front. I have windows right there too, so I would want something low to the ground.

I've got flower bed edging right now but it looks cheap (because it is).

I like that little stone wall. I would probably make it myself though.

I love that spilled flower pot look...very neat.

Are you looking for a retaining wall, or more of a walkway?

If it's a walkway, a flat shovel + gray rock & occasional Round-up would also look alright.

Retaining wall. It literally just hugs one short wall in the front. I think I'm gonna go play around in Home Depot and just see kind of stuff they have.

I'd love to just collect old pieces of rock or stone from around...

Oh and no toilet bowls, I would probably get fined by homeowners asso. haha

That is what I'd try to do. You could probably relocate/repossess some from your local and state government, if you feel adventurous.

Once this starts to sound like a good idea, please check yourself into a home.

This is one that I made at our house about a month ago. It isn't quite done yet as next year we will be putting more annuals in the bed.

The rock is Arkansas field stone. We use pine straw for mulch. It's more expensive than wood mulch but it last longer.

Find some nice neighborhoods and see what you like, take some pics then the local garden center can help you find what you need. Local nurseries would be best.

We did spill pots at my cousin's mom's house. But we used mexican pottery type pots instead of regular terra cotta flower pots. Super cute imo

The more I look up pictures the more I love them! Just not sure how I would arrange it, maybe one in each corner. Its just a small space so I don't want to make it too busy.

I have one with wal mart bricks. Wish I would have done it years ago. Raised beds are definitely the way to go.
