There have been studies using warfarin and sodium nitrate to control the population. I believe these have been effective.

Sodium nitrite is a painless death, whereas warfarin is not. Apparently, other wild species are not much affected. Obviously, it would have to be carefully delivered, maybe in corn soaked in diesel?

I believe Texas has done similar studies, but don't know about MS or LA.

Thoughts?

I really don't think shooting them is gonna put much of a dent in the population unless the hunter is out night after night. For trapping, the traps would have to be reset everyday, which is not feasable for someone who live hours away.

anti personnel mines work pretty good, but you have to post signs that the pigs cannot read

LSU doing some work on this currently

LSU Ag Center hog bait

They do big time economic damage to crops. Didn't read anywhere about possible effects on Black Bear that may get into the bait

Looks like you stopped reading too early, one more sentence and you would read "Obviously, it would have to be carefully delivered." That's why i inquired about studies that hash these things out.

From what I’ve read raccoons are very sensitive to sodium nitrite, more so than pigs, deer are also sensitive but less so than pigs.Due to the gluttonous nature of bears I would imagine they would also be harmed by it .
Therefore the problem of a delivery system that would exclude animals besides pigs. The bait described in the article would not be attractive to deer ,it doesn’t sound like that would be a problem.
Keeping it from raccoons and bears will be problematic.

People get apoplectic at the term poison.Sodium nitrite is very safe, there is no residual accumulation in the muscles. It is metabolized by the digestive system,if the pig eats enough the red blood cells can’t carry enough oxygen and the pig dies.If they don’t eat a lethal dose they recover without any harmful effects.Any scavenger animals that eat the meat of dead pigs aren’t harmed unlike other poisons such as Timic.

It may be expensive but Jager tries to get the sow and they use live cam. LINK

It’ll have to be a combo of heli-shooting-the-shite out of them and trapping.

Heli is a Money maker.

They’d also find a way to grind them all into fertilizer or some other way to make money.

Give baws in non trap areas cash for each hog.

Trap them and release to China.

There is no way to poison JUST hogs.....no way!

Genetics is the only way which is also very difficult and expensive....

Hogs and Coyotes are here stay, unfortnuately.

Yeager trap has been fairly effective in our area. However, you cant drop the gate when first 3 pigs get in there. You have to let them come in and out for a couple weeks and then drop the gate on the whole sounder.
Have killed 22 in one drop

Here we go...this thread will get interesting.

The amount of sodium nitrite used to kill hogs is extremely low compared to what the FDA allows in food for human consumption. Studies have shown that lethal doses to hogs will not kill vultures because it is neutralized quickly by enzymatic activity.

Yes, there are some potential impacts to wildlife like deer and raccoons. That is why the delivery system is important. If it can be delivered in a way that limits non-target impacts, this can be a huge game-changer in the fight against feral hogs. But that's a big "IF".

Like they do nutria? Beavers?

How’s that working?

Bounties usually work opposite of the way they are intended. If I can get $5 a tail for a nutria, beaver, or hog why would I want to kill every one of them? I can kill some of them and make money and leave enough for seed to keep making money. Or I could catch the hog and cut the tail off make my money and let it go to make more pigs that I can make money off of

Wolves?

I was thinking more like 50/head. Gotta make it high enough to make people want to go get em.

I have been to the hog research facilities in Kerrville and Idlewild. I’ve spoken to the lead biologist and seen the work at bait design and delivery systems.

You can bet they are way ahead of the game at point than anyone of us. There are so many uneducated opinions that it takes time and understanding to truly grasp the problem and it’s proposed solutions.

Hunting will never gain ground on the population.

That's even more incentive to make sure they stay on the land, like Ron was saying.

I've never understood the concept of a bounty on wildlife. Why would someone want to wipe out a species if they can make money on it?

That's why people transport the beasts around--because they can sell hunts and make money off of them. Demonetize hogs. It should be illegal to profit off of them in any fashion that would cause someone to want to move them.

It's going to take attacks from all fronts to reduce the hog population to even a manageable level. I don't care how many people are killing with traps or hunting them. If you are killing 1000s of them a night, there are 100s of thousands out there. And they breed like rabbits.

It’s obvious you have put more thought into this than I do not doubt your grasp of the situation. I just figured having hunters go after them in a concerted effort would seriously deplete the numbers, and the only way to do that would be to reward them handsomely. Kinda like crawfishermen. I realize hogs reproduce far too rapidly to eliminate all of them. The gestation is too short and they start breeding too early.
I did not consider people wanting to conserve them for continuous income. I was thinking more of the greed and killing all they could. Even going out after work to see if they could knock off a few.
