They've done some of that in wild horses, but it's transient . The delivery method is always the issue. In horses the shot them with implants that dissolved. Feed throughs pose the same problem as poison with non target species.

You fkn Nancy’s having emotions about dead feral hogs. being the main reason we will never get rid of them.

I reckon the 100lb line is to just set the hook and not necessarily try to keep them there.

Feral hogs are a problem, but there is an ethical way of killing them and an unethical way. That's a brutal and inhumane way of killing hogs, and I guarantee he isn't moving the needle one bit.

I’ll ask you: how do you control rats in your home, other property? The movement of the outdoor industry to make hogs a game animal in the minds of “hunters” is working.

Got another 12 last night in the state trap. That’s three sounders and nearly 70 hogs gone from my 600 acres

Curious on the agency and type of trap? Do they charge you to rent the trap?

State of Mississippi hog control program. 100% free except the 2lbs of corn you put out every day and the camera.

Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce

Applications for the next round are due Monday August 15....I highly recommend as we have sent many hogs this year to heaven.

While many people want to be rid of them completely, there are land owners that protect them. They’ve made a sport of it and when they lease land to deer hunters they tell them they cants shoot the pigs. The pigs are saved to be hunted with dogs for sport

There is a huge issue with this in some southwest Miss counties.

I spoke to a couple of east Texas baws last week They make good money catching pigs and selling them to high fence ranches. Said they make $500 for hogs over 200 lbs and good cutters. People pay good money just to shoot a big hog

As long as it’s considered sport and legal to harvest them, we will have problems with them

Yup. A vendor I deal with does this and turns them loose after catching them "to preserve the sport for his children". He's not spaying/neutering, either.

From what I’ve read raccoons are very sensitive to sodium nitrite, more so than pigs, deer are also sensitive but less so than pigs.Due to the gluttonous nature of bears I would imagine they would also be harmed by it . Therefore the problem of a delivery system that would exclude animals besides pigs. The bait described in the article would not be attractive to deer ,it doesn’t sound like that would be a problem. Keeping it from raccoons and bears will be problematic.

The real problem is that it kills birds. Work to hard to keep game birds around.
We finally got mad enough we got a Big Pig trap. We have taken out 20 pigs trapping in the last month. These systems are incredibly fun.

According to what?

They've done studies with vultures consuming significantly more sodium nitrite than what it takes to kill a pig with no lethal effects.

Vultures are feeding on dead hogs that have consumed the poison. Thus not directly exposed. The dead hogs are still safe for human consumption by the way.

This idea of selective poisoning came from Australia. The bird deaths have been studied there. The birds consume the poison directly thus killing them.

We’ve been part of the study in Kerrville with Biologist Justin Foster. Last I heard the bait to use is available. LSU has been working on a fish ball bait for hogs.

I did find an article from 2018 about some bird deaths in Texas--mainly sparrows and blackbirds--caused by the birds eating bait that had dropped from the feeder. I could see small birds like that dying from a small amount of feed.

The article said they were working on reformulated the bait to make smaller crumbs, but I don't recall it saying how that would reduce the deaths.
