I personally doubt if it's imminent. But unless someone steps in with a bunch of $$$, it sounds more and more like it might be inevitable.

Worse than going under, someone like the Freedom Group might buy them -- and ruin them -- like what they have done with Remington and others.

If there's a special Colt model anybody has been considering, this might be the time to snag it.

I've always wondered why they never tried to get back in the revolver game (beside their single action army replica stuff). Pythons, King Cobra, Detective, Trooper are all selling for lots of money and people love them. I guess they got rid of all the tools and machines but Colt Python was a really great 357. I would think they could toss Ruger to the curb and go after Smith who is really up and down.

It cost too much to make the python profitably.

Too much done by hand.

ETA: Colt hasn't tried at all to innovate. They've rested on their old designs and let everyone pass them by.

Colt tried/trying to bring back the Cobra but they did it in a .38. Every other manufacturer of revolvers has that basic gun but in a .357.
They just aren't smart business wise.

Ya it makes me sick the my fil had a copy python and sold it for 1200. Needed the cash for something, but that gun a year after it sold for almost 3k.

Wish I could have bought it, just didnt have the cash.

While the demise of Colt is truly sad, it's not surprising. Colt's been in and out of financial problems for years. A big part of their financial problems was the inability to appeal to the civilian market. Instead, Colt continued to feed at the trough of defense/law enforcement money. As those contracts dried up, they got into trouble. During a time of record gun sales, Colt went under. It's amazing to grasp how badly mismanaged Colt was. Despite the booming concealed carry market, Colt was never really a player.

Like everybody else, I look back and wish I had bought several Pythons -- at the time I thought they were too expensive.

Colt really failed to understand the market. I have a colt Ar15 and don't get me wrong it's good but nowadays BCM, LMT and DD are all in the price range and offer much more better value and configurations. When you have a company that snubbed it's nose at the civilian market and allowed competitors to spring up and offer products equal to or better for the same money, that company is in trouble.

And that's just the Ar15. Look at how many M1911s are on the market today that would be some ones first choice in 1911s.

Then where is their pistols in the polymer pistol category? Smight & Wesson has a great line put and no real competition from Colt.

It's on and on and tragic that such a great name has fallen to almost obscurity.

What Colt needs to do is get hot and heavy on new Ar15s, produce a line of polymer pistols much like Smith & Wesson has done and work on the 1911s more. Make a gun that isn't an alternative but the standard. I'd like see such a storied company stay in business and produce desirable firearms.

a great deal of this is just marketing
colt has squandered the head start they had in consumer perception and now it's likely too late without a massive expenditure in R&D and marketing/sales

And that's what's it would take to turn them around. I hope some one with a vision and capital takes them over and gives them a real makeover.
