With the debate on the season this year simple question...

Last year the season opened the third weekend in November closed the normal weekend and re opened the historic weekend in December. However the last weekend was a week later in the coastal zone (last week in January).

Do you prefer this framework (last year) or the current (this year).

I hunt in the coastal zone near Ville Platte and I would much rather a later start and ending to the season

Lets not forget that there are plenty of rice leases in the coastal zone. I'd like a later season for these, but at the same time, the true saltwater coastal leases are mighty low on water by that time.

Open later and close later, it's just that simple. I think the guys that voted to move up coastal opening must have been hot boxing the truck in the parking lot befor the meeting and forgot how they wanted to vote

I agree based on weather alone. No hard cold weather until mid December usually. Way too warm in early November.

In our coastal area(Pecan Island), we killed limits every hunt until Jan 10th. I like early seasons. I think areas currently in coastal, like Evangeline and St Landry parishes should be in East. Why not a coastal zone for parishes on coast and a separate area for everyone else?

I agree. The "coastal" zone includes way too many areas quite a distance from the coast.

I like the early opener because my lease on the coast is useless except for some late afternoon hunts. Venice is no different. I'm see rice field guys object but most of their field are played out by then also and they are hunting front birds. Historically the river is up by late Dec thru spring and there is tons of suitable habitat in the delta region and the birds move off the coast. Last year was an exception because there wasn't the typical rise.

I've hunted Venice all my life and had a lease in Buras for the last 35 years. I like the late season close I'll find water, let me hunt when the majority of the birds are here.

30 years ago I would have agreed with you, but now there is so much acreage flooded north of the coastal zone the pattern has changed. Add to that the fact it only takes a minimal tropical storm to whip out a ton of feed, by the time a late season would start the feed is gone and the birds don't come back the rest of the season aside from major fronts. Besides I'd like to get the coastal over so I can spend the last two weeks hunting swamp.

I loved the later start and finish they had last year. Damn shame they screwed that up.

the marsh hunters want the early start and the rice fields want the later start, I wouldn't mind seeing it alternate yearly to be fair to both

ETA: But once Nov. 7 comes around I'll be damn glad I don't have to wait another week

I've alleays preferred early openers. You were hard pressed to find a duck left on our lease after New Years. I Don't think we had a good hunt after Dec 28. During the early part of the seson limits were the norm. This was pecan island area.

I'm in same boat. Some years we'll kill a few late, but second split is a few good hunts.
