Went to step on top of a fallen pine and luckily looked down and saw his white mouth movin in the shadows..
jumped back, thought my heart was bout to jump out of my chest...
checked my draws cause I thought I shat myself. then we proceeded to get back on the main roads where it was a little more open and damn if a bear bout 350lbs crossed the road bout 30yds from us..
wasnt fast enough to get a pic of bear, but this is its track.
we quit scouting for places to muzzle load after the scare from the GDCK, and looked for some arrowheads. I found these points and a piece of pottery and my buddy that was with me found 2 nice points.

Florida water snake.
My dad taught me at about 5or6 to look on, over and around logs before stepping over with a rattlesnake that was laying opposite side

I was climbing over a log deep in the swamp last fall. I threw my first leg over and almost put my nut sack on a cotton mouth. It was only about 20" or so, but it was coiled up with its mouth wide arse open.
I still get the heebie jeebies thinking about that.

Mine really wasn't a close call, but I thought it was kinda funny. My aunt has an old farm that backs up to a river, with a springfed creek running off the pasture to the river. A few of us had been working outside around the creek for days, and had only seen a few tiny copperheads that got bootheels to the head, nothing too bad.
The fourth day she decides to try out the new speaker system on the back deck, cranks up the country music loud. Within two hours I see movement at the mouth of the creek, where it meets the river. The biggest cottonmouth I'd ever seen, a little over 3ft, is coming up the creek, stopping every few yards to stick his head up a little and look around. He was making a b-line for the house and deck. He never checked up, until he got lead poisoning. I swear I think the music brought him in, prob sounded like what Jase would call a frog paradise.

The skin was baggy on this one you could tell it hadnt eaten lately.
Killed one about 10yrs ago that was 4'10" and big
around as a 2liter.. I'll try to find a pic of it

Links on the Bayou #7. I pull approach left into very small wooded area along Middle Bayou. Looking for ball when I feel something squishy under my Footjoy. Look down to see small cottonmouth writhing around and trying to bite anything. I stepped just close enough to the head to prevent an ankle bite. Jumped pretty high and did not hit another good shot for 4 or more holes.

Yeah where I grew up they get to around 3ft then seem to just get fat. I want to say this one was a little closer to 4ft, but I wouldn't swear on it, and he was as big around as WHD's cankles.

We don't have CM's up here, thank goodness, so I don't have a story to share concerning them, but...we do have timber rattlers and CH's up here. This link reports on this one gal's experience up in West Virginia after she got nailed by a copperhead whilst she was out huntin with her boyfriend. (Good lookin, gal, btw) Now as I understand it, a copperhead is supposed to be the least venomous of all the venomous snakes here in the USA? Considering how much damage this copperhead did to her, I can't imagine the damage a cottonmouth or big rattler could do.

So how far does a cottonmouth fly when hit with a 7 iron?

I did not venture back in to find out.
