Get a 3/4" drill bit and run through the trunks. Connect by a rope with cinder blocks between trees. Tie some old pallets in too if you can get some.

No perfect depth to sink them at. Ideally you'd have a few different mats at different depths since Sacaulait change depths based on conditions.

Deep is best all around. They go there in the heat of summer and they go there in the cold of winter. When they're spawning you can catch them on the banks all day so no need for trees.

Put in bucket and pour concrete around base of tree. With it standing remove branches from different locations on tree to make pockets in the brush. This method is much more effective than just weighing down and tossing overboard. If it's a private pond, use pipe or bamboo and stake them on bottom. This makes it very easy to locate your trees, but that goes for neighbors too.

On lake Conroe they used to drill a 1" hole through he trunks at base and then run a 20 ft length piece of 1" rebar through 20 or 30 trees and then place 5 gallon bucket of concrete on each end.

they would drop them parallel to main channels or in a V shape pattern on the end of main lake points.

PVC trees combined with 20 to 40 gallon plastic barrels (free at most car wash places) with holes cut in them is a great way to go too. as mentioned sand all plastic with 60 grit to rough it up so algae can grow easily.

The police camp in BR put vertically stacked pallets in the middle of their ponds at one point. They slightly staggered them so there was alternating overhang that the bass would hold under in middle of the day to get out of the sun. hooks get stuck on those easily though.

For cheap biodegradable buckets to cast concrete in stop by your local KFC and get some chicken buckets.

Great advice on marking with long PVC or galvanized pipe for private ponds. Make sure the stick several feet above the water to account for level fluctuations.

For large impoundments try using a large square plastic container (cat litter container) and sealing it off full of air. Sink it with the structure and you will be able to see it on sonar easier.
