Choosing to memorialize a hunt with taxidermy. Your opinions...

I have had several animals done or replicated. A flat head catfish, two ducks, and 4 deer. All were caught/killed by me. The canvasback thread reminded me of the one canvas I have seen during a hunt which I helped kill but my hunting partner mounted. I have also heard of several people asking for specific species of ducks from friends to complete a taxidermy set. I would not want to mount something that I had not personally and solely taken.
I am just curious what your individual requirements are for having a mount done.

Something that surprised me a bit. I know a guy that killed one of the highest scoring 8 points in La. history. He actually received calls about having a replica done. Apparently, there is a market for record deer antlers involving people hanging the mount of not only a deer they did not kill, but killed by someone they don't know and will never meet.

Why not just create some fake antlers then off of totally imaginary measurements. Same result in my opinion.

They want it to represent a real deer I guess.

but unless you laid your hands and tape measure on the original how real is it? I mean it is all perception.

Stores like to brag that they have the"XXX" record whitetail on display etc.
Pay good money for it.
I personally mount game ive taken but for ducks and people who like to hang them for their beauty at work etc, i understand wanting to take a mature one shot and have it mounted

I get ducks. They are beautiful. I'd rather have someone else's duck displayed in my home/office than a picture of a giant pear.

Early 90's, my 70 yr old uncle killed the last deer of his life, a huge 10 point with a borrowed shotgun (mine) while running dogs. He had cancer, very few worries, and even less money. When offered by a retired green jeans hunting with us, he took $100 for the head, which I caped out and handed over. The buck was later mounted and hung in Mr. greenjeans camp, and I "heard" it even had a plaque with buyer's name on it, but have never been in said camp and have no proof.
I couldn't believe it, but put nothing past anyone.

If i am paying to get an animal mounted it's definitely going to be something I shot.
I currently have a full body bobcat mount. It is not as good as xenon's but it's ok. I wish I would have just had the hide tanned since I could actually display that in my house.
My wife (and dog) hate my bobcat mount so it stays in the attic. I do move it around to scare her when she goes up there as a protest.

I don't get ducks. I want to kill any I mount. It makes it more challenging to go to where a particular species is common, shoot one that is mature, and not mangled by a bad shot and then get it mounted.
But on the SD trip I did not keep a cock because I found you could get mounts in perfect condition if you wanted them from trapped and farm raised birds, and could do this much cheaper than normal taxidermy.

Pretty much this. And I'll add this: it needs to be something special that I felt was a serious accomplishment for me or a special hunt with friends/family. I would have a hard time mounting something I shot on a hunt that someone else did all the work on, set me up in their stand/blind/whatever. I don't give a shite if someone else does though. it's a free country.

I used to kill wood ducks all the time when i was younger, but then went a few years without killing them. Was always upset i never got one mounted. Two years ago, my dad and i shot plenty of woodducks over several hunts. But the way the pond was set up, you were basically destroying every duck that landed. I kept trying to find one to mount but everyone j had shot had a broken beak, destroyed wing, etc. my dad shot one on closing day that wasnt beat up. So i used his tk get mounted. If im gonna pay upwards of 400$ to mount a duck, i am gonna use one thats not beat to shite. I did just as much work and put in the same amount of work my dad, and helped him limit out that day. I dont see anything wrong with that.
