I now know where to focus my Grand Isle fishing
Wasn't a tagged fish caught by an unregistered person on opening day?
Many years ago 17 year old me argued with my dad that I should spend $50 of my less than minimum wage grocery store salary on a STAR entry. He, like most parents probably would, said it was a waste. That weekend I caught a spec that would have won the kids division by over 1lb. 17 year old me would have sure loved that little aluminum hull boat that I would have won.

Yes behind timbalier. There's always one caught on or around GI. Had a guy i did business with catch one off bridge at Elmer's Island day before it started. That would piss me off too.

Future FIL caught a spec a few weeks ago that would have put him in the lead for that division but wasn't registered. It wouldn't have held long though as someone registered caught something bigger.

I don't consider it playing the lottery. Somebody is definitely going to win in all the categories (tagged excluded). Your lotto ticket in this case puts you in competition with individuals not luck (unless you just can't fish worth a frick). The money goes to a specific organization that I fully support.
And to answer the question- I've bought maybe $200 worth of scratch offs/lotto numbers since it began in '91(?)

From what I gathered in the la sportsman article, those weren't star fish.

I believe the guy your talking about that caught the 2 tagged fish within 24hrs were both research tags, not STAR

I was sight fishing a big school of small fish the other day and had one pop up with a tag in its back. I knew it was the wrong kind, but i caught it anyway just in case a red tag ever pops up like that.

FWIW, just got back from my trip. Caught 15 reds and none had a tag. Saved $50

not all. i won the "cobia" division a few years ago and didnt. however, i did have to sign a consent stating that i would if asked to.
