Catching trout on squid?

Whodat and I met a couple few weeks ago and the lady caught most her fish on squid. She said she loved using squid bc its tough and didn't have to bait her hook as often. Makes sense in good bite but I've never heard of this. Anyone else have any experience with this? I'm artificial bait kind of guy myself for what's it worth

Superior sells these baits I think they are called b2 squids
I've caught trout on them before but I don't use them very often

If speckled trout weighed 30# I'd never get in the water. Those things are vicious and will eat anything.

They can be bitches though

Squid is awesome for white trout when they're schooled up. Much more durable than shrimp. Can't imagine a spec would turn it down.

White trout will eat anything when the bite is on. I was surf fishing once and they tore up all the plastics I had on me, so I tore a piece of rag and put it on my jig head. They bit that too. Then I started throwing the plain yellow jighead with nothing on it, and they were hitting that as soon as it hit the water.

I've used squid for reds on surf rods and caught specks in the process more than once. But it wouldn't have been my first choice if I had been targeting specks.
One of the weirdest things I had happen was when I was fishing for specks with live shrimp and a popping cork. The cork went under and I start reeling in. Fish was fighting really strange and I thought I had something foul hooked. Low and behold is was a squid. That sucker had to weigh over a pound and it did not want to give up that shrimp.

Used to use squid all the time. She's right, it's much tougher and last longer.
No doubt. I've had them hit a bare hook

Squid is a Yankee bait.

It is a yankee bait. But it is also a southern "old school" bait. When I was a youngster, I knew lots of old men that would fish for specks, or whatever was biting, with those old translucent green solid glass rods and Penn 109s. Throw on some 30 lb braided dacron, a double drop leader, and squid. That was before there was any artificials designed for speck fishing except maybe a spoon. Live shrimp were few and far between and hard to keep alive without aerators.

It's a great bait. I grew up using it. I'm surprised more people don't use it because it is tough and is very good in muddy water.
Butterfish are another great yankee bait. It is what everyone up north uses to chunk for tuna. They are much tougher then pogies and they don't stink. Every box we bought said "caught in the gulf of Mexico". They were really expensive so the commercial guys might send all of them up there for the price premium like they do with crab and king mackerel.

Where were you fishing? Does the coast off of Louisiana have an abundant amount of squid? I've only encountered small ones when sorting through shrimp, and really haven't heard of anyone catching one.

I've caught some decent trout in grand isle (16-18") before and when I put them in the boat they were regurgitating squid. I immediately thought of using them for bait so this scenario makes sense to me.

Speckled trout are opportunistic feeders. They aren't going to pass on a piece of squid if they're hungry. It's a wild ecosystem, they gotta eat to live mane

I understand that trout will eat anything when they're hungry. I'm talking about the bad fishing days.
