I'm new here and its going to be my 1st year hunting on tensas or any nwr for that matter. So with the abundance of bears on tensas I was wondering if you could carry a sidearm. Also I have a hunters safety card but on the website it states a bowhunting safety card was wondering if my hunters safety course will do. Thanks for any advice as I am new to public land.

if you are used to hunting private land and are going to try public for the first time, prepare to be pissed...there are some real dipshits stumbling through the woods...

that is good...Tensas has some damn monster bucks, but you have to get deep into the woods before all of the nimrods come out and they will push the deer in on you...also, stay past 8:30 when they all start leaving and they will push them around again as they leave...

sorry I can't help with the laws, as I moved to Mississippi quite a while back.

I personally would check with the wildlife and fisheries folks to be sure...

Tensas does not allow you to carry a firearm, or a limb saw or any arrows for your bow. They are actually not opening this season.
The new law that allows you to carry a firearm while bowhunting is for private land only i believe. Im certain its illegal on Tensas though.

No sidesteps are allowed on the refuge. I carry bear spray.

I never had a problem with bears but it Is pretty spooky walking up to a stand 1 hour before any light near a feeder with a bow in hand and see a bear eating corn. Usually they turn and run but one day the bear may be a sow with Cubs and .... Who knows?

It's black bears, not grizzlies. We have them on our place and they are more scared of you than you are of them. The only instance where the bear may get aggressive is if she has cubs. Just don't move towards the cubs. Hogs are way more of a threat than bears.

Also, the new firearm while bow hunting law applies to private land not public as someone else mentioned.

This is confusing to me. Why would there be a law against carrying a sidearm on private land either way?

I'd suggest you google up the rules and call the office to ask. Fed land is a little different than state WMA's.

Tensas Brochure

I do not think you can carry a sidearm.

Bowhunter safety is a different course than Hunter safety. Different card.
