He's a lefty and older - used primarily for waterfowl. Prefers pump action

Considering Browning BPS, Win SXP, Benelli nova.

If I felt like the 870s were still made as well as they were when I bought a couple of them in the mid 90's I would consider them as well. I am going to avoid that gun though b/c I don't like the direction it has gone.

Need to stay under $7-800

Any opinions welcome here

870 Wingmaster. Don't buy the plain Jane 870's. Big difference in them.

BPS for lefties, bottom feed and eject, lots of choke options if you want to go aftermarket. Put a pachmyar/limbsaver pad on it to reduce recoil a bit

I had a BPS back in the day and hated it. It was like shooting a single shot... always had trouble grabbing shell from magazine. I had to keep an open spot on the lip of the blind to jam the butt on.

You can get a decent semi-auto for $800... He will get used to shooting it and forget that he prefers pump action.

I think Franchi and Stoeger have lefty models

Considered the semi for a long time but the guy is 75 and has shot a pump for 65 years. No way am I going to try to change that.

Not really. I have a few autos and I still go back to my pump action. I'm 56 years old. Even my main rifle is a pump.

I'm a lefty and I loved my BPS. I regret being a dumb arse teenager and trading it for a Remington 12 ga (it was a 20 ga youth gun)

Isn't the BPS expensive?

Lefty here. I've never had a problem w right handed pump guns. Semi autos like to eject shells right on my forearm, but I usually have long sleeves on while hunting.

Does anyone on the OB shoot an Ithaca?
They're also a bottom eject shotgun.

The other thought is what does he shoot now? If he likes it, shoots it well maybe get a modern version (unless its an 870 ....) rather than switch actions etc on him.

Had an old model 12 that was given to him by his dad when he was like 11 years old. It and his mid 2000s 870 were stolen almost a year ago. He was "OK' with the 870 but agreed with me that it didn't compare to the mid 90's 870 mags that I currently own.

The model 12 was retired and was in his will to be given to me. It now belongs to some tpos.

Had a couple when I was a kid. I loved those guns. I think they were model 37 featherweights???

I still have a model 37 and browning bought the patetrn to make the BPS, its a good gun but mines a fixed choke... full and only 2 3/4 so it sits. They are popular w/ shotgun deer hunters up here w/ buckshot. They are really light and kick like a mule

Can't go wrong with 870 WINGMASTER. Don't get the Express (cheap). The original is the best shotgun ever made. I've had mine since 1978 and it still operates like new. I think a new Wingmaster will cost you around 600.

Yours was a lemon because it worked! LOL

I had 20 specks 20 yds out yesterday and got 1 shot. Happens a lot.

Heavy gun as well since the old man is 75.

I'd got with the BPS. I've had mine for close to 20 years and it's never missed a beat. I have an 870 Wingmaster as well, and to me, the BPS is a much smoother gun.
