.270 is like getting hit with a heavy whiffle ball bat.

When sighting in or target shooting it slaps a little. But I absolutely never feel recoil when shooting deer with it. Does 30-06 or 7Mag kick enough to feel it when hunting?

i bought the limbsaver recoil buttstock pads... but generally during a hunt i'd say no. Sighting in my 30-06 few times without much padded jackets on etc pre limbsaver pad... frick yeah my shoulder hurt like a mo fo.

I have a break apart .243 for whitetail. All you need for deer.

I'm a 308 fan myself. Mainly because I'm cheap and a 308 can be cheap to shoot with bulk ammo. 30-06 would be my second choice for the same reason above :)

270, 7-08 and .308 are ideal whitetail rounds.

7Mag and 30-06 are overkill on whitetail, but you still end up with dead deer.

I'm curious as to how you think a .308 is perfect when a .30-06 is overkill when their ballistics are virtually the same.

I've wondered that for years. I reckon the aught six kills them too dead.

Agreed. But just to be a little cooler I went with the 6mm Remington.

I'm in market as well. Looking at a gun for hogs and predators in open fields and eventually deer. I'm leaning 25-06, looking at Kimber and Tikka

I was too several years back. But the gun I wanted didn't come in a 25-06.

Ballistics wise, the 6mm Remington was not for off and the gun came in that caliber. Wise choice, great for deer/hog size game out to 250 yards or so. Never lost one and Ive shot quite a few.

Nah brah. My knucks don't break anymore. Only problem I have is my pointer finger on my right hand. The first joint has been screwed up so many times, it just needs a light twist and it starts popping out.

My dad made me shoot my first deer with a 300 mag, and then laughed his arse off when I started crying because I thought my shoulder was broken. Not funny for a 10 year old

I fought with a buddy's 30-06 once because the scope tube was bent and I didn't figure it out until after a box of rounds. Definitely bruised my shoulder

Damn right, deader than dead and it's completely unnecessary when simply dead is good enough.

Who get's bruised shooting a 30-06?

Now, if you said a.45-70 in a handi-rifle. Yeah, that will start to smart after a box of shells.

I have a Tikka .308. It's the most accurate rifle I have bought from a store. Killed an elk with it last month. It's way more than enough for whitetail

The second most accurate round I have shot is the 7-08. I had a browning lever action that was really accurate. I sold that gun and really regret it. I killed 8 deer with that gun and fired 8 bullets. If you are shooting nothing bigger than whitetail, then it is a great choice.

I like .270, but less than the first two.
I've never liked 30-06, but I have only fired a few times.

If you plan to hunt bear, elk or moose with this rifle then you should consider 7 mag and 300 win mag. .270 wsm is also a great choice. It has nearly the same ballistics as 7 mag but a shorter burn time, ergo less recoil.
All three of these kick though.

But, back to your point: 7-08 is an accurate and deadly round that is easier to shoot.
I'd go .308 first though.

I have a T3 in .30-06 and a box of 180's will leave a mark. It's not miserable or anything but you'll start to feel it after a few.

And I own the hardest kicking shoulder fired gun on earth I'm pretty sure, so I'm the most credible source around here.

Love 270 short mag. Have killed killed everything from coyotes to elk with it.

This, and two forty three beats the other three. But they're all good enough that it's a no lose proposition.
