My son races started on a crf 50 then went to a crf 70 then to a kx 65 now on a kx 85 the two kx's fly. I like the ttr's because of the electric start. I wouldn't buy a 50 go straight to the 70 just gear him up good and let him roll

I can take him with me, but I have to come up with another reason to be there and then just let him sit on a few while we're there. It would be a surprise for his birthday or Christmas (bday is the day after Christmas). Maybe looking at the 70cc range would be better if that kid is 4/5 in that pic. I just don't want to put too much bike under him at first. He rides his bicycle like a mad man and has good balance. The KTM bikes are nice but more than I'd like to spend on a first bike.

Yeah the KTM 65 is too much bike for him and the KTM 50 is automatic and the clutches suck. I see people every day spend 5k on those 50's and they are constantly working on them.

I remember when I was 8 years old I had an old HONDA Trail 70. That was a fun little bike to learn to tide on.

You can still find them sometimes on EBAY.

It sounds like your on the right track. I think you'll be fine with whatever you decide. I took Carson with me to get oil and filter for my 4 wheeler, and that's all it took. I got the bike for him a couple of weeks later. He never new it was coming.

If he'd grow a couple of more inches he could get it back!

Go with something like a Yamaha TTR 110 or one of the Honda 4-strokes. They are bullet proof. Don't go with a 2-stroke racing bike unless he's racing right away. They require much more maintenance. If he decides to race later, you can easily sell those small 4-stroke bikes to move up. For the record, My kid and I raced dirtbikes for 5 or 6 years about 10 years ago. If you need to go cheap, buy a used Honda or Yamaha over a new Chinese knock off.
Had one of the top of the line KTM 50cc racing bikes for 9 months. It spent 5 of those months in the shop.

This...

My kid has been riding and racing since he was 3 (8 now). He's on a KTM 50 and 65 now and those things will absolutely rip. All of the Japanese 110 four strokes are a good choice that he'll be able to ride for years. Hell, I have a TTR 110 I use as a pit bike.

Just make sure he has the proper safety gear and never let him ride without a buckled helmet, chest protector and boots.

And yeah 911Moto, I'm going to set our 50 on fire when he's done with it. I hate that f'n thing.

KTM 65, he will get bored of the 4 stroke pit bike quick. He will be bugging you to trade in the ttr or klx on the 2 stroke. Then get a motorhome and 20 foot enclosed trailer and go racing. Then he'll want to go to Cairo, Ga. to train, then lorettas, oak hill, mini o's, world mini, etc...

Start him on a 4 stroke 110 Yamaha or Kawasaki. No clutch, 3 speed tranny, and a low saddle will benefit him in the learning process. Then move to a clutch and 2 stroke as he gets the need for speed.

I work in radiology at a hospital, I'm aware of the danger involved. Safety is right up front in my mind. He'll be protected as much as I can make him.

Side note, wife told me lastnight that if we get him the dirtbike we have to get the older son something of equal value. Makes sense. So she said go cart. Now I'm thinking about just getting one go cart and letting them fight it out for driving rights.

Be a good dad and buy 3 bikes. That way the tree of you can do something together.

Go to the Honda dealership and see what size he would need. At 8, I think you can skip the 50 and go with a 70/80/100 depending on his size.

Look on craigslist for something bone stock and low hours. They are usually very easy to find. You can get one a lot cheaper that way and those engines are pretty bullet proof stock. Very low maintenance. Then you can sell it pretty quick and get something faster when he out grows it.

Looked at those, forgot to type them

I already have a 4 wheeler, so the dirt bike for one and maybe a go cart for the other. My oldest doesn't like to drive the 4 wheeler. Says he hates handle bars. He's weird, idk.
