I opened the back hatch in the marsh the other day to a busted livewell pipe and water pumping into the hull like a frickin hose. My a-hole was puckered up and we were in 2' of water. I can't imagine being in blue water and having the same scenario happen.
also, thank the lord for auto bilge

Had this happen in Henderson. I was alerted by my auto bilge going off. I ran to the launch and plugged it up with a cork.

we did the same until I moved some shite around and got my hands on the shut off valve. I have no clue at what point it broke running across the Mississippi Sound but had auto bilge gone out as well it wouldn't have been good

Dang, so what's the story on why it filled with water? Why'd that last guy jump in the boat like that without the motors on? I'm curious if they had a guy in the boat the whole time?
I don't blame them, we were fishing offshore not long ago and we opened the back hatch by the motor to adjust flip a livewell valve and left the hatch open. Doesn't take long to fill up a boat, we couldn't get it on plane and had to use a hand pump to get water out. The dang auto bilge didn't work for some reason.
Needless to say if auto bilge goes out it can get harry real quick offshore. Good reason to have two bilges on two batteries if offshore.

I am amazed with three on the boat there wasn't one of them on VHF with coast guard the entire time.
While that is far from an ideal situation it's the definition of time to have a ditch bag out and be in CONSTANT contact with the coast guard.

they were at a rig, not going down in open water that would require up to the minute GPS cords. IMO, at a rig, once you make that mayday call with your location it's all hands on deck to try and bail the water out

Wonder why they didnt try to get on step and flush water out back? maybe still had a diver in the water? Definitely a situation I wouldn't want to be in!
Had auto fill line of livewell break once on a run from dularge to last island, boat started feeling funny and hard to steer, came down off step thinking it was a prop issue and nearly swamped the back of the boat, had float switch on bilge but never used to switch it on. a-hole puckered real quick and as previously said was only in 2-3' of water. Needless to say when the motor cranks up the bilge switch is on now.

Your bilge pump is running at all times while your outboard is running?

I do something similar. When I get up and run, I hit the bilge on and let it pump any out and watch to see how much if any comes out then switch it off.

Its on a float switch which is on a manual switch so what I mean is I turn the manual switch on which will allow the float switch to operate the bilge pump in the event water is in the bilge. If no water in bilge pump is not running.

No chance they were getting on step with that much water in the hull.

To continue to tell them they were at moxy?

i got ya, i was hoping you weren't running the bilge with no water in it just in case you sprang a leak

I agree somewhat with your point if the CG already had a boat on the way less important, however when the boat began to roll if on the VHF with them to say boat down people in water would have helped with current calculations and location of occupants if no one was near them.

still waiting on the story

When I first got my boat the damn bilge was wired to a float, but then wired directly to the switch. So you flip the switch and the bilge would come on.
Got down in there and wired it correctly but damn what a PITA. And I'm no electrician but I did stay at a holiday inn express once, so I like to check the damn thing about every other time out for good measure.
