That lake is full of unmarked well heads.

There are hundreds maybe thousands of old pilings scattered about in that area. You have to pay extra attention during the daylight around there.

seems like it would only be common sense for people fishing there every day such as charter boats and locals to start marking these with some pvc pipes or crab trap floats if nothing else.
I realize they cant mark every one but dangerous hazards "seem" to be something that would be a "justified" expense to spend tax money on a crew going out and installing "some sort" of above water markers for.
not talking about going full blown government wasteful spending here, but there must be a "reasonable cost" way to "attempt" to protect people from "known" hazards

They need lights is what they need.

That's a scary place to run in the day light.
Seven people in a 25ft. bayboat???

I know the charter Capt and he knows that area like the back of his hand. This could have happened to anyone. We were fishing out there Friday night and coming in it was dark as hell. No moon, no stars, lots of cloud cover, it was very erie to be out there. God bless all the families involved

I know (and like) a lot of you guys who run out there at night. Surely you all know the area better than me, but I just don't see how it's remotely safe.
Condolences to those involved in this incident.

No it could not, some folks have more sense than running through obstruction laden water at night at high speed.

No, he thought he did, hubris is a killer.

Unfortunately, putting lights on everything out there isn't feasible, nor reasonable.

Is 7 people in a 25 ft boat a common thing? Seems like 3-4 too many....

Maybe they went surf fishing at the islands.

Hauling arse through that area at night is not smart.

Just curious, how slow is slow enough for people not to get thrown out of a bay boat or slammed into the console or deck, when you hit a solid structure?

I hit a petrified stump going 20 in a ski boat and was personally fine. But cracked the transom.
The problem is that center console guys have 250 Yamahas and go 60 at night.
And no, lights aren't the answer. Lights on a boat don't work like lights on a car. The best thing to do is use a Q beam on occasion to spotlight the bouys to be sure you are in the channel. Otherwise drive by the moonlight. No you can't see for shite. But that's why you go slow at night or not at all. Jamming along at 60 at night like so many do seems crazy to me, but I guess I'm a pussy.
