I was planning on taking my boat (1st time) to Chandeleur Islands this weekend to use as mothership for a center console. Forecast is east winds 15-20, so that doesn't look like a fun trip.

What about anchoring on east side of Lake Borgne and using the cc to go into Biloxi Marsh? We'd be there for Fri-Sun. With all the wind, would the water be a mess and a waste of time?

As noted in earlier thread, I'm new to this type of fishing, so any info is appreciated.

UPDATE: Thanks for all the tips and info! We're going to head out tonight and hope for the best. Guess we won't tear up specs, but will enjoy good food and drink regardless. Hell, it may be worth it just to watch the meteor shower while we night fish of the big boat.

Won't to to Chandeleurs due to weather, but are looking at anchoring at either Biloxi Bayou, Little Bayou Pierre, or Isle au Pitre, if weather is acceptable when we get there tomorrow morning.

Anyone know what water depths are in Biloxi Bayou/Bayou Magill? I draw 4.5' and have been told no problem to go in for a mile or 2 for protected/calm anchorage. Latest charts show 1' or unknown, so I'm thinking of just anchoring on east side of Lake Borgne if we go there, which should be fine with east wind. Seems like it would be much more protected for the cc than trying to find fish with cc from Isle au Pitre.

Are there any other bayous on east side of Borgne that have better depths than Biloxi?

Any thoughts?

Just wait until next weekend. Conditions are awful and there’s going to be some rain in there too

ditto what redfish said. the weather is supposed to be crappy starting saturday afternoon.
HOWEVER, the east side of borne may not be too bad and you could get up in the marsh with the smaller boat(s) and provide all of us with some duck info.
ps: what type of boat do you have to act as a mother ship for a cc?

53'sedan bridge (Navigator, West Coast boat can handle the forecast conditions), draws 4.5'

We'd fish Friday and as long as we could Saturday, staying there both nights, then head in Sunday afternoon

ETA: I'll do what I can about duck info, but am not much of an expert in that subject either

Although it's seem foolish not to heed the advise of someone called 'Redfish' on this subject, we may go anyway as a test run...if things get better, we could go to Chandeleur next weekend, or whenever weather improves.

Even if we don't catch fish, we'll have a great time just hanging around.

Yeah I'm not sure. I won't be fishing this weekend.

The water was 2' high last weekend and this east wind is just gonna push more water into the marsh.
Now, I'm sightfishing redfish not going for trout so I'm not sure if the trout are there or not. But I do know that the redfish are all up in the marsh grass and not in the water.

Take the center console and fish the ship channel north side of the dam. Fish any mouths that feed into Borge

Did that this weekend and picked up a couple reds and a few trout. Nothing to write home about. Must have caught 10 15" reds and 50 10-11" trout

the weather will be absoluely horrible this weekend, but if you really want to find a few fish in bsl, theyll be around. just find some pocket blocking the wind. bait was out of control last weekend and fish were there too.

I haven't decided if I'm fishing BSL or spending my weekend at the bars around the marina. I really wanted to run around the sound looking for triple tail under storm debris but it's going to be rough as all hell.

thats actually how i found fish in BSL last weekend. i was running out to look for tripletail and the wind was twice what was forecasted. sucks because people have been killing them.

Yeah I saw Shore Thing caught one under a dead hog, I bet that fricker stank

I haven't fished the bay since February as the Biloxi Marsh was so hot during spring/summer.

If you don't mind me asking, and I'm definitely not asking for your specific spots, what part of the bay did you find bait/fish at last weekend? I'd like to put the wife on a few fish in the morning and then end up inside the Harbor at Tripletails for lunch/football games

Ole War, there's good water at the old ranger station just west of isle au pitre for the big boat, but like others are saying the weather is going to have it a mess. Clean water might be few and far between. You will have to dig into the marsh pretty good. Fished grand isle last weekend and with the wind, the tide barely dropped and was high as hell, fishing was brutal. Either way you shake it, you're going to be fighting wind. Crossing to chandeleur would def not be fun either. I think I would probably decide to explore the bars on the mainland this weekend.

You have a very nice boat. If you draw roughly 4.5, I would advise against taking that out there since it would be your first time given the forecast. You've probably got a lot of experience captaining that boat, but loosing an anchor out there in the middle of the night with a windshift is not a fun time. Theres a ton of sandbars out there are you can't always rely on the GPS charts.

There are certain bayous in the Biloxi Marsh that will accommodate a large boat like yours, no need to mothership from Lake B. That would be a blast. I would suggest that. Always a good time back there.

If you go this route just make sure you map out Flat Boat Key If you are coming from the east. You run a big boat like that aground on Flat Boat and you are fricked

Man that's no joke. She likes to hide just under the waterline at high tide. Have to swing wide around flat boat, that flat on the northwest tip likes to shuffle around. But talk about some smoked trout in the spring. Aside from fighting the crowd, that's my favorite place to fish around May. A 1 knot tide tugging at a stringer full of big trout plays hell over that key.

i was working east side close to portage trying to stay out of the wind. But there were so many birds working the bay that it looked like people were catching fish all over the place. The trout haven’t really moved in yet, but there are still enough there to make it fun. Redfish are pretty thick though.
