What are some pre-meeting things I can do to try to get clued in that I'm not in for something bad? I've talked to the seller at length and in detail about the vehicle, we've been exchanging a lot of texts to further our discussion including him sending all the photos I've asked for including a photo of the vin # on the title which matches the vehicle's description. Noting tips me of that this guy is nothing but on the up and up, I'm just a nervous person.

I think if you start asking about his personal media accounts, he's going to start questioning meeting up with you at all. Have him park it, come up with an excuse for being 10-15 min late, and then by the time y'all are through talking about the vehicle, asking questions, etc, it will be cooled down from operating temp

Ask for too much and he'll get concerned of your intentions and start to second guess the whole deal. If you've actually spoken to him over the phone, he's willingly sent any info/pics/details you'd need then there's no reason to doubt his legitimacy. If there's no way to meet and cold start it in a public place then just go to his house or wherever works best. Shame it has to be this way but people can be weird. If you end up having to go to his house bring someone along, screen shot his number/text and forward someone his address. That way if something happens police will atleast have a decent lead on where to search for your dead body.

I would be more worried buying a watch or something paying cash. An off road vehicle, not so much. People selling OB approved equipment, in my mind, are not likely to rip you off. Personally, I'd have my gun in my truck and if the guy didn't look right before I got out of the truck, I would just take off.

Take a buddy with you, both carry. Cashiers check at walmart seems like the best option for you since you want to cold start it.

I know you said you are nervous about the situation, but dont clam up and act all fidgety while the transaction is taking place or he will be the one with his hand on his hip ready to draw.

Inspect the item with no cash in your pockets and say that you have to go get the money. Close the deal in a public place or in someone's office or shop. I recently sold a car in a cash only sale and we closed the deal at a mechanic's shop. Gave the mechanic $200 for letting us use his shop to count out $4200 in crisp hundred dollar bills. No problem.

Did he do any work on the car or inspect it? Giving someone $200 to use their shop to complete a transaction sounds like a pretty dumb idea. Plenty of places you can do it for free.

When I have bought and sold vehicles, I always want a cashiers check. When I bought my Jeep, I gave the guy 5 $100 bills as a deposit, and we met up the next weekend (he lived 2 hours away) and I gave him the check for the rest of it. My wife drove me up there, and we met at a Cracker Barrel halfway between us. She was in the drivers seat of her car with a pistol in her lap. Of course the guy shows up with his whole family, wife and two kids, they're great people and we end up having breakfast at Cracker Barrel like 2 tables down from them after we completed the transaction, but you never know.
When I sold my old truck, the guy ended up coming to my house to pick it up. I had met him after work for him to test drive it, since I was still driving it to work and back. I took a small deposit from him, showed him the title in my possession and he came back on Monday after going to the bank to give me the check. Same thing when I sold my wife's old car. Took a small cash deposit, like $200 or so, and they came back a day later with the rest in the form of a check. There's just no reason to deal in cash for anything over $100-200 in a person-to-person sale. You can go get a check from most any bank for such a small fee that it shouldn't matter to the buyer or seller if that is how you pay.
