Fingernail polish works great.

There really isn't much you can do. After you are bitten by them a few times you learn to ignore the itching afterwards and not scratch yourself until you bleed. I used to get attacked pretty often when I would bushhog on my tractor in shorts. The funny thing is that by the time it itches the chiggers are no longer there.

The pharmacist shared a secret with me the other day and it worked great!

Dr tishners. (Mouthwash, been around for a long time). I now keep it in a spray bottle. It works on any kind of bite. Almost instant.

I use a few tools. The first thing I do is mix bleach and water. Usually 5 parts water to one part bleach. Then I scratch the piss out of the bite until it opens up and bleeds a little. Then take a cotton ball of mixture and put on the bites. Do this about twice every half hour. Then put a product from Wal-Mart called Chigarid on them. Usually they are gone in 2 days or so.

Campho-Phenique seems to smother them pretty quickly and helps with the itching in the meantime.

I tried all kinds of stuff, clear polish, Clorox baths, powders, creams. Time is the only thing that seemed to work. I'm pretty sure the old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure had to do with chiggers.

Your redbugs must be different than mine.

Red bugs I can deal with. Chiggers is a whole nother ball game. I got them bad and had to get a perscription for them. Basically an insecticide I believe.

I thought "red bugs", "chiggers", "harvest mites"...different names for the same thing?

For Redbugs, I just cover the bites with rubbing alcohol. Seems to work for me.

Negative, chiggers are way worse. They dig in at night and they will drive you nuts.

I know redbugs and chiggers are the same. I have never heard of harvest mites.

Same thing.

No cure, only can treat the symptoms.

The only prevention is not to go outside in the summer.

Despite the myths, they aren't in your skin. They bite you kind of like a tick. But, they get knocked off when you scratch it or take a bath (assuming it's your week to do so). Not much you can do except treat the itch.
