Looking for a "Red Dawn" type of firearm. Looking for something that could be used for self defense and also used for hunting if I needed to live off the land. Standing up to the elements in between cleaning is a big plus. Been looking at the ACR, AR, AK and Socom M1-A.

A .22 should be in any lineup, lots of ammo can be carried in a pocket...

AR and its not really close.. Can kill anything in North America and millions have been sold in this country so parts and ammo will be plentiful.

Ruger 10/22
light on self protection (will work though) but living off the land will be your priority.

If things ever got to a real SHTF situation I think it is best to lay low and avoiding trouble till the masses have killed themselfs off...

This.

Have a AR or AK if you need it for defense, shotgun and 10/22 for hunting.

I'd have to go with a Ruger 10/22. Compact, light, ammo is cheap, well placed shots are leathal

That's a pretty sweet little gun. Wonder how accurate it is at farther ranges

+1 on the 10/22. Mine is very accurate to 50 yds.

I have a couple of .22s that are suppressed. They are quite nice.

An AR is a great rifle too.

I can take both and not feel overwhelmed.

I will certainly take rifles though. I don't think I would look at my shotguns if I was walking out the door.

Overall for what you're describing it would be between an ar or an ak, I'm not really sure why you even included the other 2...

.22 for sure. Cheap, plentiful ammo allows you to carry much more and share between a rifle and sidearm.
