Did a search and found nuthin'. Wife-lady gave me the green light to get the 13yr old a rifle. He owns a .243 by his granddad's and fell a couple of decent bucks. She is at a loss for presents and I convinced her that he needs a small calibre rifle for perfecting his marksmanship. Recommend me a bolt .22 under $200. Don't worry about optics. I got that sorted. Appreciate the attention to this request. Cheers!

See if you can get a slightly used CZ452. IIRC, mine was around $300 brand new

Savage Mark I-G or Mark II-G (main difference is the I is single shot, II has a 10-round mag).

Marlin or CZ would be my next choices.

pony up to 250 and get him a Savage Mark II FV-SR. Hands down the best budget .22. They are frickin tack drivers and have lots of aftermarket options available

Do they offer a threaded barrel? What's the capacity limit?

CZ 452/453 are no longer in production and fetch a pretty penny on the secondary market. Probably looking at closer to $400 than $200. But thats the direction I would go too.

Not quite $200. Once you get to a grand, there are a lot of really nice options.

Looks like they just sell the 455 now. Mine is an amazing gun. I had been looking for one for a while online, and just happened to find it at the gun shop by my house when I was getting some 9mm rounds. Bought it on the spot

Yeah, its just the 455 now. I have a 453 in 17 and I love it, oje day im going to buy one in .22. Its just that they get a little expensive when they come up.

If I were the OP, I would definitely stretch the budget amd go with a used 452. Itll br something he will cherish forever.

man a wood and steel bolt 22 takes me back to some damn good days as a kid.
I have a 1950-something Stevens bolt rifle that is easily the straightest shooter I've ever owned. You couldn't get it away from me know for any price though it's probably only worth a hundred bucks or so

wish I had a son to give it too

I have my Dad's old Remington 511 Scoremaster. Wish I knew how old it was. Might be my favorite gun. So accurate.

Carson is a lot more up on current offerings, market prices and all that - I will generally defer to him and agree with this choice.

I will add, while I think the Ruger "just does" rimfire semis, both rifles and pistols better than most manufacturers - this is probably true of Savage on the rimfire bolt side - their bolt guns are generally outstanding and their rimfires are no exception - in particular, from a value standpoint, I think Savage and Ruger may be the very best brands.

Stainless Ruger with wood or synthetic stock. Takes 20/22 magazine. My favorite is older stainless with xytel stock.

I have my Dad's Stevens 66-B and that thing is a tack driver. Not worth a lot of money, but it's the first gun I ever shot, so it means a lot to me.
