re: Best ammo for deer hunting?

That's because it's a fast round. Regular non-premium bullets are fine at pedestrian speeds (.30-30, .35 rem, .45-70, etc) but they struggle when slammed into bone at high velocity. They over-expand or completely come apart.

If you can't kill with Core-Lokt then I don't know. I personally use Nosler Accubond 165 gr .308. All 3 deer dropped and didn't take a step and one was a nasty gut shot.

never had a problem w/ core lokts on my 30-06 i don't like it much with my 7mm thus far.

The problem is core locts don't handle that kind of velocity well and over-expand especially when they hit bone.
ive read this multiple times recently. And im scared. Ive been hunting corelokts for years out of my 30-06, and i just switched to 270wsm. havent shot a deer yet, so im thinking about switching.

If I was using any flavor of WSM I would shoot nosler partitions or barns TSX. With the .270wsm I would use the TSX since the bullets are light.

Federal vital shock 165 grain nosler soft point.
Have taken 80lb deer to 800lb elk. If the deer don't drop on the spot, they don't go far, and there is plenty of blood.
I don't shoot them IN the shoulder. I shoot just behind it, or sometimes a neck shot if I have to.
Eta: 7mm rem mag

That's like asking how you like your women.
I've shot all different kinds of bullets over the last 35 years, from Core Lokt to many premiums, through my .270.
It has been my experience that Nosler Partitions will cause a baseball size exit even if placed directly into shoulder bone. If you want a blood trail, shoot behind the shoulder. If you want the deer to crumble, shoot the high shoulder and it will shock the spine.
JMHO - not as cultured as most of you when it comes to expensive rifles and fancy calibers, but have killed a lot of animals.

I'm shooting nosler partitions in my .30-06 now. Only shot one deer with them but was very impressed. 80 yards through both shoulders with a very big exit and a bang flop.

I have had the best results with Barnes TTSX. I mainly shoot a 30.06 (7mm Rem Mag on a few big fields-450 yards or so). The Barnes will drop them. It also works very well on hogs.
I have also had good luck with Nosler Partition and Core Lokt.
I did not like Remmington Scirocco. Shot an entire box and did not have any exit wounds. Deer and hogs would always have to be tracked. The Barnes will knock a 100# hog on its arse. Like it got hit by a truck. DRT.
Highly recommend the Barnes.

My sons first deer was killed this year with remington .270 core-lokt managed recoil
dropped the deer where it stood!
Perfect shot placement took out both lungs and top of heart @ 82 yds.
However I do have concerns that the bullet never exited the deer. The deer was slightly quartering and the opposite shoulder stopped the bullet from exiting...that shoulder bone did not break...
bullet was recovered looks to have expanded well and retained most of it's weight, but shed some of the mushroom blades
two possible factors though...
Managed recoil or Core-Lokt
thoughts?
edit: I have usually use Federal Premium Nosler partitions and need to switch back to them in my .270...it's just that I was letting him use mine until he got his Rifle for Christmas...so I re zeroed for the managed recoil core-lokt...and now my 13 yo daughter wants to kill a deer so I'm stuck with the managed recoil core-lokt for now

Why do they hardly produce exit wound? I shot a doe earlier this year and there was not much blood and no exit wound.

nothing but core lokts for over 50 years. no need to change.

I think I'm sold on Barnes TTSX.
Need some more samples though.

Explained earlier. They aren't made to hit bone at high velocity. They're fine in slower calibers.
