Hickock45 demonstrates how in the limited confines of a house it is just as easy to miss with a short barrel shotgun as a rifle. In the stress of the situation you may not always be aware of what is behind your target, a 12ga with birdshot will still stop the intruder, but reduce the chance of going through several walls and hitting someone else.

Bap doesn't believe in that, but I do.

Barrells a little short. I want the 10 ga because it will be very loud, cause severe damage, and stop any man. While the recoil may be bad, I would rather deal with it than use a .410

You serious Clark?

I have a 10 gauge and would probably grab my bolt action 17 before that behemoth if I heard a bump in the night.

Hell 12 gauge bird shot kicks a hell of a lot less and is just as effective at home defense (at normal inside the home distances)

You can go ahead and do all of that. I'll stick to my 10 gauge shotgun and not worry about a damn thing.

I don't think there's a big difference in in a 10 gauge and 3 1/2 12 gauge with the same size shot. Especially at close range in a home. The shot is the same size, the larger bore diameter of the ten that allowed more shot and powder would be somewhat negated by the longer shell in the 12. This is what a gunsmith told me when I learned about shotguns, correct me if I'm wrong.

The posters bringing up recoil have a valid point, but when the fear is running in you at 100 mph because you just heard your door get kicked in, recoil would be the last thing on my mind.

Birdshot is effective, but...I like buckshot. If I could have it anyway, it would be loads with .50 cal buckshot pellets in them

Might be the last thing on hour mind but when you are half asleep and that big bastard goes off it's liable to blind you and deafen you on the first shot. Then you gotta pump it and find your target again. I don't care what anybody says the bps is the least reliable pump gun and you're only option for a build like this. I've got one it's a novelty. I'll probably shoot a case or so out of it this year but an 870 or 590 short barrel 12 gauge with an extended magazine is what you want.

10 gauge bps home defense gun is like a .50 ae desert eagle open carry piece. We get it. It's cool. Now put it up and go get something you can actually shoot.

If you knew a damn thing about shotguns dummy you would know that there is no advantage of a 10 vs a 12 but gumps gonna do what gumps do that's why dumb gumps ask dumb questions. I'll answer your gump question get the 10 gauge in crimson it works better than any other 10 ga gump cause dey all different

Go see the damage a 12 gage will do with bird shot at 5 yards and think again. Low recoil and quicker follow up shots.

When momma and the boys need to retreat to the closet and wait for hell to come knocking, she is prepped to answer the knock with Saiga 12 with a 12 roung mag full of 3" #4

But a saiga 20 would be just as good.

Actually the difference in a .10 and .12 with 3.5 is negligible.

However, I'm not sure you can get .12 3.5 buckshot.

My home defense weapon is a 20ga mossberg maverick. Light enough for my 13 year old to work if he needs to, and the pattern is tight enough that I feel very comfortable that it would seriously frick up anyone's plans for the night.
