Any advice on taking a trip south of the border? Or is it better to stay in the states and fish one of our trophy lakes? If someone has taken a trip to Mexico what lake.. Thanks

If you are fishing on the border bring an AR 15 and a couple of handguns. Go with someone who is also experienced in shooting guns to be safe.

That being said Falcon Lake has some of the best fishing in the world for Bass.

There are too many great bass fishing opportunities in the south US for me to risk my safety going across the border.

Falcon isn't the lake it was 5-6 years ago. If it were me I'd probably go with Anglers Inn. Just steer clear of Sugar and all the other lakes near the border.

I looked at some of the guide services at lake falcon.. I took a trip to lake fork 3 years ago, I would go back to lake fork, but just wanted to see if anyone on here had experience with the lakes in Mexico

Fork is a better lake than Falcon right now. Now, a few years ago, Falcon was as good as it gets.

I've been to both El Salto and Huites. That was about 10 years ago. Would not dream of going there in today's drug unrest. However, fishing those lakes was the most fun you can have with your clothes on

LINK
For those who haven't heard the story, attached is a link for why you should avoid lakes near the border.

Just went to anglers inn website. Thanks for the info

Just don't go to any of the lakes near the border and you'll be fine. All the guys I work with live near the border and that was their advice when I asked about a duck hunt in Mexico.

That story made the hair on my neck stand up.
Not that I needed any reassurance but, wow.

We used to go to Lake Guererro and San Lorenzo a few times a year, this was over 10 years ago. We would bring the motor home and 3 trucks pulling boats, stay a week. We had a chest freezer we ran on a generator and froze all filets before the trip home. We'd bring our own gas too, gas down there is bad.
Those trips were a blast, you could catch fish on damn near any bait you wanted too. Even back then, each village you came to, the local police would stop us and hold us until we gave them a case of beer, a little money, LSU baseball hats, anything they could get, and we'd be on our way.
Don't think I would do it these days though.

actually Falcon Lake is very safe, the guides stay out of the Mexican side of the lake and you wont see much of anything. For some reason the bass fishing has tapered off there, but still quite a good experiance when it is on. I highly recommend against going into Mexico for any hunting or fishing. Mexico is a lawless frontier these days.

I remember reading about Angler's Inn on Lake El Salto sometime last summer. LINK Seems like a pretty good price, and like some others said if you stay away from the drug cartels around border towns it could be a very cool trip.
Lake Ohkissa, in Bude MS, can be really good if your into deeper water (kind of like a mini Toledo Bend). I have family near Okeechobee, so I'd probably make that trip before I went to Lake El Salto, but that's definitely something I'd like to do when my little man gets older.

My dad hammered the bass on one of the Mountain lakes. 50 bass a day. He caught a 12lb'er as well.
Lake Baccaracc(sp?) I believe.

Falcon is pretty safe on either side of the border, as long as you stay close to the border on the Mexican side, which you pretty much have to as low as the water is these days. Tons of good fishing on the Mexican side. Peolpe run into problems when they venture way up in Salado creek. That's where the guy was killed on the jet ski (probably an inside job) and where the Mexican marines had a shootout with the cartel, complete with machine guns and gunships.
You will definitely feel like you're in Mexico in Zapata .
