i just recently started purchasing Japanese Shimanos on EBAY. They are the best reels made.

And they are hardly used.
Just picked up a Shimano Scorpion Antares the other day for $150 shipped.

It's like a $499 reel new.

I am shocked at how well these are holding up. I expected to buy them cheap on sale and then just repeat as necessary simply throwing the old ones away. I have not retired one Mettle yet, and reach for those first over my Lews(older) and Garcias.

FYI, the Lews reel is a Revo, same factory same parts. Daiwa Tatula best gears and cast further but heavier than a lot of reels.

Lews, Abu Garcia, and Pfluegers are all Pure Fishing.

It's basically down to aesthetics these days with those three.

I personally prefer Pflueger. Those $250 Garcias are $150 Pfluegers.

I'll put in another vote for Lew's.

They may not be the best overall, I haven't tried every reel out there. But they are the best bang for your buck I have found. I have 4 of them and they have greatly increased the ease and pleasure of fishing for me.

I've had a couple Lew's over the years and I've liked every one. That being said I always pick up my Shimanos when it's time to go fishing.

I have a guy I deal with who rebuilds the old ones. I got two Chronarchs from him with ceramic bearings, etc for $200.
