My junior high aged son has gotten pretty serious towards bass fishing. He has been invited to fish a few tournaments with the high school team. I don't have much of a background with bass. Normally with our saltwater fishing it's basic spinning reels.

Any suggestions on good baitcasters that I can get him? I am willing to spend a few hundred if that's the direction I need to go.

I won a 13 Concept A and a Concept C and I like them both. The Concept A can throw a country mile. I mainly fish with Lews and Shimano and most of my reels fall in the 180-250 range. I probably would never go any higher than that for Bass Fishing.

Can't go wrong with the Lew's speed spool at $100 a pop.

I can't stand the handles on the lew's for some reason. they are fine in every other aspect. Just something about the angle or the texture.

Bass pro shops Pro Qualifier reels are very good reels for the price. Usually retails for $99 but goes on sale at times for $79. I've had a couple for almost 10 years and still use them.

The Abu Garcia REVO line of reels are on sale right now at really good prices. Both of the reels I linked below are fantastic values at their current prices and will last him many, many years of fishing. Biggest difference between the 2 models is the braking system. Both are great reels. Personally, for the extra $20, I'd go with the SX.

Abu Garcia REVO S - $80

Abu Garcia REVO SX - $100

ETA: This Lew's reel is another steal of a deal too:

Lew's Laser Pro Speed Spool SLP - $80

Does he currently throw baitcasters? Follow up question if the answer is yes, how many and what kind does he currently use?

There are a lot of good baitcasters you could buy in that price range. Some have more specific advantages in certain applications than others.

That being said, I'm a Lew's and Diawa fan. But I'm using mostly Lew's.

Look for a used Curado or Chronarch E series. You can usually find them for $120-$150 on Bass Boat Central or Texas Fishing Forum.

Cabela's has a sale on Curado i200 for 129.99. Get him the 6:3 gear ratio for his first since it's a good all around gear ratio. They are coming out with a new model this year thus the sale. Best reel for the money IMO.

He does. He's got a couple basic diawa combos that are not great quality. I have a couple old ambassadors that he uses some. I am just waiting to pick him up a couple better ones

I have. He and I are both leaning towards Lews. I'm just wanting to make sure we get one that's good for him to work with.

I'd would start him out with a H2O XPRESS™ Mettle 6'6" MH Baitcast Rod and Reel Combo Academy

My son got the 13 Concepts. They're alright but when I let him throw my JDM Scorpion Antares he hates them.

Look for the JDM Scorpion Antares on Ebay used. They're awesome.

Revo STX is what I suggest. Better quality than many of the reels mentioned. Retail is ~$200 but can be found online for as low as $110. That is a lot of bang for the buck!

You should ask him what he thinks then come here for opinions on those models. Also, rod choice is just as important a factor in good set ups.

Well, may I suggest the Lew's BB1 Pro. Smooth as silk, casts a mile, excellent drag, and the braking system is top notch. Can be adjusted to throw just about anything.

If you are looking to get him something more on the upper end, but still novice friendly, that is an excellent choice.

I didn't notice this mentioned. The BB series is Lews older legacy line of reels. If you can find a BB1 Pro on sale pick it up.

Lew's newer line has two 'Tournament' reels that I would suggest, either the Tournament Pro G or Tournament Lite G. Both are in your price range $150-$200.

I have bought a Revo and Lews in the past year. Recently picked up Curado and it has become my go to. Shimano is hard to beat as far as quality and performance goes without a ridiculous price tag. I talked to a guide in the lake Charles area that fished them 200+ days a year with little to no maintenance.
