His house is surrounded by marsh and I'm on the screened-in porch drinking bourbon, and I heard a distinct noise that I knew exactly what it was despite never hearing it in person, only in videos. Was pretty cool.

Youtube video of a gator bellowing. NOT A VIDEO OF WHAT I HEARD.

Your cheap arse BIL needs some starter fluid. That 4 stroke is close to starting.

Heard a big un doing that at Lake Eufaula 20 yrs ago and still get the hair standing up on the back of your neck feeling when I think about it.

Sounded like a frickin dinosaur ( and Im damn near old enough to remember them ... ;)

I didn't take the video bro, I was just using it to confirm what I heard.

Sorry, I'm drunk and wasn't clear in my OP

That's cool. Gators already have nested and most have hatched around here. Shouldn't be bellowing right now

I heard one last weekend in sherburne.

I've heard them at lake Martin but that's always been in the spring.

Not arguing by any means just putting this out there for others

The call of the cormorants that are here right now are often confused as an alligator. An anhinga has a very bellow like call as well. Have been around lake Martin often and had people thinking the cormorant sounds were gators. There is a great rookery at lake Martin and the great blue herons and neotropic cormorants would usually nest together in the same trees

Damn. Seen a couple big ones do that back in the marsh around houma. Cool as hell to see their backs rise up and vibrate the water.
