People here do a great number of different sports but I don't usually hear of anyone here scuba diving, spearfishing and rig diving.

I have friends who do it and are in the rig diving clubs). I've been to their rodeos and met quite a few members.

Where are you, rig divers? I'd love to hear your stories and see you pics of the big fish you get!

Used to, but have to give it up. Best dive was with a Whale shark in open water. That is when I told my son we needed a bigger boat. Next was swimming with Mekee Whales.

My friends who do it free dive. That sounds much more enjoyable than scuba.

It really took off back early in the 1990's. There are some great clubs now even for newbee's to learn the ropes. Diving is one of the biggest things I miss in life.

Started in 1979 and gave it up about 8 years ago. We had a great run. My hobby was to find stuff to dive in the gulf besides rigs. I found 4 ships I think were sunk during WWII by u-boats, numerous rock ledges loaded with fish and lobster, sunken shrimp boats, oil field tanks, and barges.

We visited SS, EI, and SMI fields running out of Morgan City or Burns Point boat landing.

I spear fished a good bit from 2002 to 2010, but after having kids and getting more into bluewater fishing, I gave it up. I've done dives in Hawaii and to me, the rigs are much better just from a diving standpoint because of the numbers of fish.

Yeah, trying to hold my breath long enough to see a fish, shoot a fish, then get back to the surface before I die sounds much more enjoyable than being able to just breathe underwater? Breathing. . . underwater. . . sounds stressful.

RNR, I started when I was in The Marine Corps in the mid 1970's. Dove Japan, PI, Down under and the Med. Some cool places. I started doing the gulf in the late 1980's. Just could never get the wife to dive. I dove the rigs a lot. Lost a very good friend out there that was very season diver about 10 years ago.

I actually started diving in 1971 taking a PE class at LSU. After graduating in 75 I moved to the Caribbean for several years diving as a job then moved back to Louisiana in 78/79.

Began rig diving shortly after.

I used to could ... Dove a lot back in the day (mainly the 90s to 2002) back when the no more fishing service (NMFS) didn’t have a 4 day snapper season. I must know RNR, once I moved back to Canada it made it tough, that and it sucks to get old. I have dove in lots of places and rig diving is about as cool as it gets, add in the hunting element of spearfishing and I was hooked.
Gotta be careful though it can be dangerous, don’t think theres been a death for a cpl of yrs off LA. Anyone who has done it for 10+ yrs all have a story or 2

My ex husband started doing it in the late 90's. We had gone scuba diving cavern diving, deep diving but rig diving seemed a bit much for me. Plus it is usually a time when guys get to be guys and as a girl, I would change the dynamics of that.

Plus the expense of it. I'd rather not spend the money on gearing me up and allow him to be able to use that money to do it as often as possible.

As for MyLSUHat. I kinda think I know him in a vague way.

The fall class. I still keep in contact with the instructor, Mr. Patterson. He and I have been life long friends. He lives in Florida not far from Destin. His son still lives in Baton Rouge.

Ginger, I often took ladies rig diving. It was not big deal for us. We were there to have fun not compete with each other. I had very few rules on my boat, but they were important to follow. The ladies would comply better than many of the men. If they didn't spear fish that would be an extra limit of snapper for those of us who did. The wife of one couple could spearfish and operate a boat as good as any man. I would let her operate my boat before any other guy on board.

As you see there's a handful of people on here that will occasionally dive the rigs.

I haven't gone this year as much as I have in years past but I absolutely love it

ETA: who are the friends you know and what clubs are they in?
