Going to try to make a trip there this weekend, but we haven't fished the area before. Tips appreciated

Leeville has an excellent kayak launch. Just go all the way down to the end of the road and you can't miss it. The kayak launch is past the boat launch.

Once launched I like to head east toward Lake Jesse (I usually don't go all the way to Lake Jesse though).
What's your email and I can email you a quick little map with some spots to check out

Going to be windy this weekend. If you go far, be mindful of which way you need to paddle back. Good luck.

Wind will be pretty tough this weekend so like mentioned be mindful of that. If you can get there I've done decent on trout fishing near the rocks going towards Lake Jesse and chasing birds.

We might wait until Monday. Looks like good weather. 6 mph winds and partly cloudy.

Lake Jesse looks about a mile from the launch. Is that about right?

Yes, roughly a mile. Maisweh I'm sure can offer better tips than me, he's local and fishes the area often.

Thanks, and what do you think we should be fishing? Hard or soft plastics?

soft plastics.
didn't check the weather yet, but ive heard a few people catching trout by the jackup barges in the bayou.
wunderground has the wind only blowing at 5 out the SSE, later in the afternoon it cranks up to 15.
FWIW, I wouldn't fish on Monday, they're going to have a west wind on Monday. all the old timers say the whores don't even put out on a west wind.

Look at all the Minimalist Challengers trying to get spots.

BTW, the "Leeville Launch" is nice but the location of the kayak launch is terrible. It dumps you right out into the bayou/ship channel that can have 100'+ long ship, tug and crew boat traffic along. The intersection of water there also creates gnarly whirl pools at times. Be very careful in a yak.
