i sell a good deal of NV and thermal units
rule of thumb:
if you're paying less than $3000 for NV or less than $5000 for thermal, it's a piece of shite. you get what you pay for with these units.
the only decent NV I've seen for under $2000 its the Nite Site Eagle, but it's very unwieldy and cumbersome. resolution and quality are good, though.
do not go to cabelas and buy the sightmark thermal POS for $400. trust me.

What Carson said. Be ready to spend money. Best thermal scopes that I have used are the Armasight Zeus series. I prefer clip on thermal but they get expensive. Also, rule of thumb is that if you plan on shooting and observing many targets, thermal is the way to go. If you plan on shooting and focusing on one target, night vision is the way to go.

I have a Sightmark Photon XT 4.6. It works really well out to 100-150 yds. I have a Gen 1 NV and the Photon is miles apart better. It's a $500 scope and I bought for hog hunting as well. I haven't used it yet but would have no issues being able to kill a pig at 100-125 yds. I may hog hunt 2-3 times a year. I couldn't justify spending 3k on something I used that little.

I was looking at reviews and videos of the ATN day/night. Doesn't look too bad for shooting 100 yards or less

ATN makes some great products....the X-Sight is not one of them. We've sent several back for stupid issues

My uncle has both. He uses the thermal monocular for spotting them and the night vision on the AR.
Be prepared to spend close to 10k though

I just mounted and sighted in my ATN X sight this weekend on my 300 black out. Since we didn't get it mounted till late and wanted to play with the night vision we decided to sight it in at night. We sighted it in with one shot (plus a confirmation shot) at around 100 yds. The unit is a damn good value imo, but I am a novice being this is my first scope lol. I got it for $550 and so far I am happy with it.

Damn it Carson, way to rain on my parade lol. Is there a common issue experienced that I can watch for?

I read the ATN was fixed with the firmware update.

I bought the ATn night arrow 4 from academy and then put a Steiner SPIR (much better illuminator) on it and it works great. I spent just over 2k for both. I've hunted with thermal as well and the thermal is much better at identifying targets, but the night vision gives you better context of the terrain and can Id the animal a little better. The biggest downside of night vision is finding them in cover...they are much harder to find in brush with NV than thermal. The other detractor is size and weight...my NV scope is way bigger and heavier than thermal scopes.

I have a Flir thermal ($6000), an ATN Gen III night vision ($3500), a Photon XT ($600) and a Pulsar thermal monocular ($2800). All depends on what you are looking to do and how serious you are about it. If you are just doing recreational hog hunting a few times a year then the Photon XT will be fine for 100-125 yds, you can buy an additional illuminator for around $100 and extend that range to around 175 yds. I have had my Sightmark for about 2 years and never had any problems with it.

Did you buy an extended battery or illuminator?
Posted on 2/10/16 at 8:29 am to LSUlefty
i am using regular double AA batteries for now (had to pick them up on the way to the camp), but i will probably buy a set of rechargeable and keep a spare set on hand.
It comes with an illuminator, but i haven't researched on a upgrade and probably won't until i use it enough to determine if a upgrade is needed. I will say it worked fine for me the first time i used it and we were shooting w/o any additional lighting.

a $500 regular scope is just above average, i couldnt imagine a $500 NV scope being anywhere near decent.
