In need of a new base layer and I've been eyeballing the llano top and allegheny pant.

Yes. I have both and they're my favorite baselayers I've ever owned. I also have the Chama and a balaclava.

The "I shop better than you" crowd will probably chime in and say you can get the same thing for cheaper, which may be true. First Lite is really quality stuff though, and very warm.

Good to hear. I'm looking for warmth while decreasing bulk.

First lite makes some awesome stuff. Not all merino wool is the same and first lite is a very high quality product.

Thanks. I like staying warm so I figured I'd invest my money in some quality base layers.

Am I the only one who read "first lightgear" and instantly thought "to infinity and beyond!"?

Guess I have too many kids

There are some things I will spend money on because when I need them to work, I don't want to be questioning why I didn't spend the extra $30 to get a high quality product I KNOW will work. The worst feeling in the world is being in the back country in bad weather and your gear fails. Now, I will admit some stuff is ridiculously over priced. I'm looking at you, Mountain Hardware.

That's what we use it for. Staying warm with the dexterity to draw a bow after sitting in a stand for a couple hours. I wear a scent control wicking layer under my wool when there is frost on the ground. If it gets into the low twenties i add an Under Armor 4.0 layer in between the wool and the wicking layer. But that gets shed quick if I'm successful because it is too warm for anything but the most sedentary activities and I find the UA doesn't wick quit as well as the merino and my base layer. BEWARE of MOTHs, they will swiss cheese your wools with a quickness during the off season. I keep mine sealed in a hanging garment bag with cedar blocks.

So you wear both the UA and first lite at the same time? Seems like that would defeat the purpose of buying the llano and chama. Sounds like a lot of clothing.

If I'm wearing my merino wool base layers, they are touching my skin. They have better wicking properties than the UA type stuff. Sometimes I wear UA type stuff if it's too warm for merino wool. When it gets cold enough, I'll switch to just merino wool. Then if it's nut hugging cold, I'll wear the wool on the bottom, then the UA stuff on top of that. But it's gotta be sub 20 degrees for that. This is while duck hunting fwiw.

Vests are also a great way to add warmth to your core while still maintaining dexterity. I rarely wear sleeved outerwear unless it's raining. The base layers and a good vest are almost always all I need.

I have a bunch of first lite stuff its all good plus i like the fusion camo. I will say that no matter what kind of base layers you have you better have good outerwear, wind cuts straight through the wool.

I have some solid Natural Gear outerwear that is good at cutting the wind. Trying to build a solid base layer now.

I've been shopping for some new bibs and I have an opportunity to purchase some First Lite Sanctuary Bibs at a discounted rate, but I'm torn on if I should spend an extra $80 and get Sitka. Does the First Lite stuff hold up against snags and tears and how water repellent is it?
