Hire a plumber to connect from potable water and give you a ball valve to install the backflow preventer.

I've done 2. It is easy to install but it is labor intensive. My system was bid at 4K by local contractor and I installed it for under 1k. I let rain bird design mine. Send them the yard layout and they send you plans. Don't buy anything at HD or Lowes. Go to a plumbers supply warehouse and get contractor grade material. They will deliver. Rent a trencher. Jet nozzle and PVC is all that is needed to bore under sidewalk or driveway. Rotors go with rotors only. Pop ups with pop ups. More zones is better. Buy a good expandable controller. Future may always lead to another flowerbed or different layout.

This is exactly what I was planning on doing. Neighbor and I will go in "halves" on a trencher to do both our yards on a weekend. Was planning on letting Rainbird lay out the system for me, especially when I saw the email price...FREE.

Neighbor mentioned the jet nozzle/pvc for sidewalks. I had never heard of that but when he said it...made tons of sense.

Was planning on 6-8 zones on a .5 acre lot due to the differences and the way the lot is spread out.

Had already read to keep same type of heads in family on a zone.

Only thing I'm still undecided about is the water meter. Our water company will install a separate meter for irrigation but it's $580 for it...rates are different but that flow rated doesn't get added to the sewer. Current sewer rate is billed based on the gallons of water used from current meter. Undecided there.

For that price do it.

My utility company does it the same way. However, when I called them to see about installing a separate meter it was going to cost close to $3k. I not so politely declined.

Do the second meter. I drilled a water well for irrigation because the water in my area is very expensive. A well complicates the design a significant amount but 14 years later it's worth it.
