One time I was in North Arkansas and maybe 16 years old. I saw a chipmunk kind of scurrying along through the rocks, cedars and brush. I walked over to get a closer look. When I stopped I see a flattened out snake literally between my feet similar to the one you posted. When he saw that I saw him, he curled up upside down playing dead much like the second picture. That snake was after the chipmunk, and he thought I was after him.

At the time I was unfamiliar with them. It scared the shite out of me and I took off running the other way high stepping like Deion Sanders. His defense worked.

I think they eat toads. Not positive.

Is there another snake that flattens out and plays dead?

When I described it, my mom said it was a puff adder or something like that. But I distinctly remember that hog nose.

My grandfather used to call them a spreading adder.

Similar situation... I was cutting trails when I dropped my machete to get some Levi Garrett. When I reached down to get the machete I saw the rattlesnake coiled right between my gotdamn feet. Deion Sanders... good description.

Also from the link...

quote:

Food: All sources agree that a Hognosed Snakes eats toads. The upturned snout which gives Heterondon platirhinos its name is used for digging up buried toads. Likewise, fangs at the rear of its jaw (photo) are used for puncturing ballooned toads so they can be swallowed whole. Some sources say a Hognose has a more varied diet that also includes frogs, salamanders, insects, worms, and newts. Others say it eats toads almost exclusively. Diet may vary depending upon location.

The one that nearly gave me a heart attack was after a chipmunk though. Could have been a coincidence that they were in the same area.

We had a rainbow snake in college we couldn't get to eat either. Had amphiumas, crawfish, small mud snake, all kinds of stuff. Ended up letting her go for that reason. Was terrible, but definitely the coolest snake I've ever had.

Tenfoe, my husband is curious where you found the Rainbow snake you had? They've always seemed very elusive and hard to find. We have a juvenile one right now, which eats tadpoles, and we're trying to get it to eat other stuff. Adults will usually only eat American eels.

Our mud snake eats amphiumas pretty good, but they have to be small enough for him.

Does this mean you've had more than one?

You're right. The Eastern Hognoses I've had would eat nothing but toads. We had one eat 5 large toads in one feeding, and there was nothing else that he would eat. However, Western Hognoses will eat mice. Bought my kid a baby Western at a reptile show, and it ate pinkies very well.
Mud snakes, in my experience, will only eat eels (amphiumas, but people around here call them Congo eels). We never bothered keeping mud snakes as pets because it was impossible to find food for them. The largest snake I've seen in the wild was at Jean Lafitte Park, right under the visitor center elevated walkway. It was a huge mud snake, and it was eating a giant "eel." I've caught a couple very big rat snakes, 6'4" and 6'6", and this mud snake put them to shame, especially in girth. Couldn't see the full body, but he had to be in the 7' range.

Hubby is dying of jealousy right now--he's ready to start wading through the Pearl River swamp to find another.

So, I'm fishing Toledo Bend as far south as a boat can get. A hognose swims from the Tx. shore right at my boat. It get to the side and starts the cobra act when I try to grab it. It swims away, then loops around and takes off for La. Dumb arse could have just slithered the levee. :CHSSB:
