I started this thread a while back. Lots of good info in it. Increasing accuracy with a bow.

Not sure where you are located but the guy at chag's in metairie is knowledgeable and helped my kid out a great deal with selecting equipment and shooting

Im in Baton Rouge, but about to move to Shreveport. I was probably going to head to Cabela's or Bass Pro and try to talk to someone around there as far as selecting a bow with the right amount of weight and what not. I just don't want them to try to sell me something before they gave me all the information I want.

I would strongly advise you to not deal with cabelas or bass pro for archery equipment unless you have specific recommendations or knowledge about the employee you are working with. Buying and setting up a bow is not like a gun, and the help of an EXPERT bow technician with LOTS of experience is worth its weight in gold. I have dealt with Chags and Spillway sportsman and have been very happy with both. I don't know any places in North La , but I'm sure somebody on here does. My .02$, anyway. And welcome to bow hunting, it will change the way you look at hunting.

Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop has a good bow department and really solid deals on RTS bows (ready to shoot). Plus 1 for Chags in Metairie, they are very helpful.

Spillway Sportsman or Bowie don't waste your time anywhere else around Baton Rouge.

If you're moving to Shreveport, I'd recommend McKinney Honda in Ruston. Their bow tech, Mr Tommy, is top notch. I've been bowhunting for over 25 years and he's as good as any bow tech I've ever used. He can't really cut you a deal as far as BUYING a bow but he'll set you up better than anyone else.

As far as the best DEALS you're gonna find, Joe Ellis Michael at "Michael's Mens Store" in Homer is gonna be the best deal on a Mathews, Hoyt, PSE, etc that you're probably gonna find. Just don't let him sell you everything else in the store. Buy your bow and then take it to Tommy at McKinney

Listen to the folks telling you to stay away from the big box stores. The smaller specialty stores will provide better advice, but you also need to have narrowed your field of manufacturers, especially with a bow.
I have never heard of anyone complain of a bow made by Mathews.
Spend once cry once.
Good luck

Presented the same question to the OB about a month or 2 ago. Stay away from big stores. You can't really have a price limit. I bought a PSE inertia. It was the last bow I shot out of about 6 or 7 from Matthews, Hoyt, Prime, and a few others. Don't take someone's word for any bow. I asked about 5 or more people about what a good one would be and no one mentioned PSE. It's what felt the best to me to shoot! Take your time shoot them all and rig it out how you want! Good luck!
